Real World DC: Episode 5 Breakdown

What is it about fame that makes you unable to hold down a relationship?

We’ve seen many Hollywood marriages go down in flames, many Hollywood romances fizzle before the tabloids get their fair share of pasting them on magazine covers- so what is it about attracting a lot of attention that spells bad things for relationships?

I don’t really know the answer but I do know one thing: never go on a reality show with a girlfriend, especially The Real World.

Ty and Mike were smart in ending their relationships before moving into the house, Erika and Josh however… well what was the over/under on episodes before Josh or Erika would cheat on their partners?

Drama In DC

Emily And Ty Start To Get Annoying (Well At Least To Me)

Are Emily and Ty done?

Are Emily And Ty done?

The show started off with lots of talk on the Emily-Ty relationship… or maybe as Dane Cook calls it, a relation-shit.

I get it guys, you love hooking up and love the fact you guys aren’t attached emotionally. It’s the ultimate situation right? (Well maybe it’s not The Situation but still…) You don’t need to constantly feed us confessionals and asides about how cool it is they hate relationships but are hooking up…

However things don’t go so well when Ty starts to come off more girly than Emily- dropping the “L word” on her in the bar.

Now I don’t know if Ty really is a softy deep down, or if he thinks using the L word will get him laid- problem is he has to remember he’s not dealing with any ordinary girl. Emily probably has bigger balls that Ty right now- and proud of it!

She loves commitment just as much as the next stereotypical guy, and has cooled off after that awkward exchange in the bar.

So does this mean Emily and Ty are over? I say no- I can see this pushing and pulling between the two to last long enough to make us wish MTV had better story lines.

By the way, can the cast stop spying on them? Ashley is once again caught spying on her roommates, and Erika and Callie join in later in the episode. What is it about roommates hooking up that makes people want to watch?

Rule #1: You don’t fall in love at The Jersey Shore The Real World House

Long Distance Relationships Aren't Realy Going To Work On The Real World

Long Distance Relationships Aren't Realy Going To Work On The Real World

Teasers from last week revealed Josh would be infidelitous soon, too bad that’s going to be his first real storyline on the show.

Josh and his girlfriend, Ashley Marconi, are talking on the phone, being all mushy, so far so good.

Next thing though, the house gets a phone call (can you really call The Real World house?) Josh’s mother, gives him the tip that his girl maybe “running around with other guys.” Man I wish my mom actually used cool lingo like that.

Cut to Josh and Ashley yelling on the phone. For a minute there I actually thought I was watching The Jersey Shore for a minute, something about phone arguments and tattoo just got me confused (Josh wasn’t talking on a duck phone right?)

So Josh deals with the girlfriend news the only way he can- with pain… and nose rings…

This Ain't The Notebook.

This Ain't The Notebook.

I was surprised he hadn’t gotten his nose pierce before I just assumed it was amongst all the other body mods he’s got going on. After he gets the work done he’s back at home saying how he actually doubts Ashley really cheated on him and says, “She’s going to be there for me and I know I’m probably going to be there for her.”

Emphasis on the probably. You know it’s not going to end well if you say “probably going to be there”.

Ashley visits from Philly and have lovey-dovey, burger sharing, moments. When she leaves I witness the worst staged goodbye kiss ever.

As she waits for the bus to leave Josh runs on, asks the driver for two seconds, and locks lips with his girl. The kind of spontaneous moment that would of been genuine if the camera was already on the bus waiting for Josh to run in.

Ms. Collins Might Not Exactly Be In Josh's Range But Who Cares- She's Hot!

So how does Josh deal with his girl now out of town? Hitting up Tattoo bar and dancing with DC socialite and blogger Kelly Ann Collins. The two go back to the house where Emily catches them making out and handles it in a very mature fashion:

“OMG They are making out! They are making out! The are making out! OMG!”

Well played Em. Also well played Josh- the 35-year old Collins could be considered a Cougar snag but the blogger’s attraction to famous people and cameras probably helped him out a bit. I’d like to see you get within 10-feet of her if you were just an ordinary person.

The only downside of making out with hot bloggers? It’s eventually going to end up on The Internet. It also doesn’t help when this is the daily routine for your girlfriend when you are away

Taken from Ashley’s blog:

Let’s face it, the whole time Josh was away I was a complete mess! For a whole month, I don’t even think I moved off the couch.

I had the same routine everyday:

1) wake up & shower (brush teeth etc.)

2) eat, that’s if I had an appetite

3) stalk his life

4) wait for a phone call

That explains why Ashley quickly found out and was furious at Josh the next day.

Another couple in dire straights- thanks to MTV!

(Also thanks to Elizabethany for the info on Ashley’s blog- make sure you catch her weekly Real World DC podcast!)

The Girls Sing, Drink, and Be Merry

Erika also gets some more face time this week, she lands a chance to sing on stage with The Cab, a band she respects not because of their record sales, but more because she has them on her iPod. I have a lot of music on my iPod- I can’t say I respect every artist I put on there. Good thing Erika is more judgmental with the music she has on her iTunes. I often whore my iPod out to the likes of Kelly Clarkson or Justin Timberlake- I mean girls like that stuff right?

In other news, girls do two things when they are drunk: drunk dial boys & cry. Callie has did both these things this week.

Memorable Quotes

Mike on short people: “She’s like a real person but smaller- like pocket size.”

Two Up

Yes I know she is still a ticking time bomb, but she managed to get the face time she deserves without causing drama. Of course I still think that’s to come.

I understand her reasons for drunk dialing, as pointed out by Emily, so I give her a pat on the back and say, “I’ve been there.”

Two Down

Emily & Ty

If only the two were really over so I can move on…

How can I not look down on you after cheating on Ashley? However I will say the way the two fight makes me believe they are just a couple that’s always been arguing and cheating on each other. It’s probably the way the two work out as a couple in some weird way.

Look I Know That Place!

Earth Treks Climbing Center: Located in Rockville, Columbia, and Timonium; looks like the crew actually ventured into MD to scale some walls.

Jinx Proof Tattoo and Piercing: Where Josh goes for pain.

Lucky Bar: I enjoy Lucky Bar for happy hours, less for actual going out at night.

Tattoo Bar: The bar is so rock & roll, just like Josh. Also the place where he meets Kelly Ann Collins and where the two held their RWDC premiere party. Looking at some of the photos the two still look close.

Josh and Kelly Ann Collins at Tattoo Bar

9:30 Club: DC’s premiere music club.

Buca di Beppo: Where does Josh take his lady? To the finest Italian chain restaurant in DC! At least it’s not Olive Garden.

Shady Bus Terminal: For those that know where the bus terminal is in NE, you have to admit that it’s not in the nicest part of town. I myself had a shady encounter just walking past it.

Rhino Bar: Where everybody is a douchebag and we know Callie hates d’bags.

McFadden’s: DC’s college bar. Love the open bar promotions, hate the watered down drinks.

Final Word

MTV fails at setting up Josh’s relationship with Ashley as all kisses and hugs.  How does Josh go from being angry at his cheating girl to saying how much he loves his, “little ball of fire?” Next thing you know they are sharing burgers in the kitchen but once she leaves he’s out making out with bloggers.

No relationship is totally perfect and even though Josh cheated on his girlfriend, I didn’t believe it was a violation of something that was truly pure to begin with. Looking at the Real World Dailies- I think I rest my case.

Real World DC: Episode 4 Breakdown

Here's a tip, don't try and hit on a girl and her best friend at the same time. You aren't getting the three-some.

The Panda wasn’t so pimpin’ on this week’s episode of The Real World DC. We all know that his main goal in is to get laid- well I’ll tell ya that as another dude living in the area- it’s not the easiest task to accomplish. Of course it helps when you have a decent game, which he certainly does not.

Meanwhile Mike and Ashley were getting along and found something to bring them together: their love of god. Unfortunately a few d-bags at The Big Hunt caused an episode long fight that left me wondering how one could maintain anger over something so trite.

Let’s take a closer look.

Drama In DC

Pimpin’ Panda Gets A Few Lessons

It doesn’t take a public policy analyst to see that there are a lot of flaws in Andrew’s game. Besides the weirdness, animal headware, and awkward sayings; he goes right for the kill faster than a cheetah hunting prey in the African Serengeti.

But then again aren’t most guys like that?

Even I know how to unhook a bra... well I think I do...

Even I know how to unhook a bra... well I think I do...

Andrew apparently needs some help if he wants to land someone besides a fame-seeking drunk groupie. So his roommates decide to give him some tips. I learned along with him as the roommates dispensed some interesting tips such as buying a girl appetizers AND dinner and the correct way to unhook a bra.

Lucky for him he had his friends teach him that- I had to learn the hard way. It probably still takes me 5 minutes to figure that sucker out. I’ll master it. Someday.

So with his new-found knowledge Andrew ventures out for some field work and lands Allison Mead, a Georgetown Student who has been no-so-secretly dreading the day her encounter would air on MTV.

Why so much dread Alli (as she’s called on the show)? Andrew totally digs you- he thinks you possess everything he’s looking for in a girl:

Congrats Allison Mead, you are now Girl #2 for Andrew.

Congrats Allison Mead, you are now Girl #2 for Andrew.

“She has a high pitched voice that I like and she says ditzy things- these are the qualities I look for in a girl.”

Hmm I think we have to work on Andrew’s game and his taste in women.

After spending the night and resisting his advances, the two go out to a picnic lunch in Dupont. Not that bad of a date idea Pimpin’ Panda. So how did the date go?

Andrew: All the girls were interested this morning…

Alli: Why, what did they say?

Andrew: Do you really like her? And all that stuff…

Alli: What did you say?

Andrew: I played it cool.

Alli: Oh…My god…

Andrew: I told them I was in love with you…

Alli: Awkward…

Yes awkward indeed. This date didn’t go well at all. However Andrew doesn’t give up easy. He manages to invite her back over that night and she visits… with her cousin…

Ya things aren’t going well at all.

I hate it when I get stuck in the spooning zone...

I hate it when I get stuck in the spooning zone...

Andrew does manage to get some alone time with Alli (thanks to Emily sleeping upstairs for the night.) By the way, why didn’t Emily just shack up with her favorite man-to-hate/love Ty? Well unfortunately Alli once again plays the nice girl and doesn’t do anything with Andrew, much to his dismay.

Later on Andrew calls her up to get a “check your e-mail” request. In a rather lengthy e-mail she must of said something along the lines of, “look you are really weird but I liked the fact you were on TV so I thought I’d go along for awhile- but in the end you are still really weird so I don’t want to date you anymore. I really hope you don’t hate me.”

Sorry Allison, he probably hates you- also who breaks things off via e-mail, what are you 21? Wait a minute…

Andrew clearly has no sense of dating when he calls it a break-up. Sorry Andrew, you weren’t even Facebook official yet.

Mike And Ashley Have A Trite Fight

Trouble in paradise...

Trouble in paradise...

Everything was going so well for Mike and Ashley, they shared a little kiss early in the season, they both like god and think church is cool, what could go wrong?

The Big Hunt apparently.

The group gets heckled by bar patrons on a night out to the Dupont haunt, which immediately made me wonder if it happened the same time they ran into their biggest enemies on the blogger world. Bottom line was this: Ashley got really bitchy about the situation and Mike hates it when Ashley is a bitch, so he tried to smooth things out by being friendly to the hecklers, which Ashley didn’t enjoy.

So that sparked the fight which lasts the entire episode. While out at the Polo India Club, Mike calls Ashley a bitch when she gets mad when someone snaps a photo of them. This manages to fan the flames high enough for an argument in the kitchen where Ashley pulls out a woman’s secret weapon: tears.

“All my hostility for her melted away when I saw her cry, ” remarked Mike.  Eventually the two talk it out and make-up with a joint confessional.

Here’s my take: I understand Ashley’s anger towards the DC locals, the city knew all about the show filming and they were easy targets where ever they went. However I also understand Mike’s point of trying to be nice and not have Ashley give the cast a bad image. However I’ll side more with Mike on this one. If I was in this situation I’d take the high road and be nice.

Memorable Quotes

Andrew asking the same question I ask everyday: “What’s up with DC? Guy can’t get some lovin’?”

Josh upon walking into Nellie’s Sports Bar: “We walked into the lion’s den without even knowing it.”

Mike it’s public when you have sex on a boat: “I’m just trying to figure out it a Gondola is a public place”

Andrew on how it feels to not get any action: “I didn’t get to sleep once, I laid there thinking about my boner. I’m pisssed.”

Andrew on his move to get a girl to give it up: “I just kept poking her with it.”

Two Up

After the house acting pretty immaturely when Andrew brought home a girl, Emily was a great roommate in giving up the room for him and his date.

While he does have no game at all, it’s entertaining to see him try and land a girl. At the same time I’m also learning what NOT to do by watching him.

Two Down

She has drama queen written all over her. Like Mike, I don’t know how much more I can take.

While he gets points for teaching Andrew how to take off a bra and I side with him a little bit in the fight, I really will knock both him and Ashley down for getting into such a stupid fight in the first place.

Look I Know That Place!

Capitol Skyline Hotel: Home of their weekly summer pool parties, I always look at it when I am driving to Nationals Park for a game- and wonder how that place manage to attract so many people. I mean if you look at it from the outside it looks like it should be bombed out.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church: Located on Church & 15th, it looks as if it will be the Sunday place of worship for Ashley and Mike. I think I walked in there once when I was lost looking for the Keegan Theatre.

The Big Hunt: I was disappointed when I heard the cast stopped by there this summer, expecting the cast to stick to swanky clubs; I didn’t think they would actually stop at decent local dives like Big Hunt.

Little would they know that Nellie's would become a RWDC regular destination.

Little would they know that Nellie's would become a RWDC regular destination.

Nellie’s Sports Bar
– “I like sports. I like bars,” says Andrew when wondering if the guys should redeem a mysteriously sent gift certificate to Nellies. Little did they know that they were walking into a gay bar. I almost did the exact same thing while trying to find a good sports bar. Their reaction as they walk in is half hilarious/half homophobic.

Rhino Bar: Is this going to get a plug every episode?

Sweetgreen: If I ever want a salad I guess I should stop by there, apparently the pita chips are awesome.

Russia House: Which one is it on Connecticut? The one with the Russian flag!

Polo India Club/Bistrot Du Coin: Ashley said that they were outside a club when she flipped over someone snapping a photo of them, looking at the video they were actually in between the Polo India Club and Bistrot Du Coin, which makes sense since it’s up the street from The Russia House.

Final Word

MTV you need to do a better job with your shameless corporate placement. I understand Subway must be a sponsor since they had subs waiting for them when the moved in. Also the Michael Phelps ad I saw during the breaks was somewhat entertaining. However nothing says shameless like gratuitous logo shots:

They walk in...

They walk in...

They order food...

They order food...

And they leave...

And they leave...

I think I saw the sign the first time.

Real World DC: Episode 3 Breakdown

You can easily breakdown last night’s episodes into two easy-to-digest plot lines/life lessons:

  1. Sometimes you shouldn’t date/hook-up with someone that’s too much like you.
  2. Never ever, EVER call a woman fat.

Two easy to remember lessons to remember as we walk away from the third episode of The Real World DC.

Drama In DC

Ty And Emily Are Mr. & Mrs.Smith

Emily and Ty Love To Hate Each Other

Emily and Ty Love To Hate Each Other

So Ty and Emily both enjoy sex, being confident yet insecure, and macho. It’s just a recipe for disaster as the two try to find some sort of official arrangement after “cuddle buddy night.”

After hooking up with Emily, Ty tries to feel some sort of remorse because he promised himself he wouldn’t hook-up with anyone while on the show. Really? It’s the Real World! What’s more real than using your temporary fame to score some chicks? At least Andrew was openly honest with his intentions. Ty becomes boringly vulnerable as he decides he should tell his ex-girlfriend about the hook-up, because ex-girlfriends love nothing more than to hear who you are currently sleeping with.

Ty’s vulnerability hits a drama-queen high when he decides to pour his heart out while the cast is out dancing. Blame it on the alcohol perhaps- but I see through you Ty and so does Emily. She is right on the money when she observes that Ty simply wants every girl to want him. His move to try and guilt Emily away from dancing with “other black guys” is weak and just shows how controlling you are.

Oh no cue the angry black man arch-type.

After the night out the two continue to bicker in front of the rest of the a cast, making me wonder how many episodes will revolve around those two and how much more can I stand it. Since Emily and Ty are so macho and tough, Emily feels the need to demonstrate her toughness by not punching like a girl and spitting in Ty’s face.

And The Party Just Took A Turn For The Worse...

And The Party Just Took A Turn For The Worse...

Cue angry black guy/creepy moment #2 (remember #1 was the most memorable, “You will have sex with me” line.)

Ty throws Emily up against the wall hold her hands above her. This is either going to get very kinky or end with a Ty and Emily PSA saying how domestic violence is wrong.

Luckily the moment defused before Ty could become a total asshole. Unfortunately he is already an 80% asshole 20% tool in my eyes. In confessional he acknowledges that you can’t hit a girl- which means he’s a step above certain people on other MTV shows.

So will Emily and Ty continue to bicker and hook-up? Probably. That’s real.

Never Ever Call A Woman Fat

While the cast wasn’t busy watching Emily and Ty fight and hook-up they were talking amongst themselves about body image, and how everybody is insecure about their bodies. MTV makes a fair attempts to approach an issue that doesn’t revolve bars and hot tubs. However when eight beautiful strangers complains about their bodies you can’t help but realize their good looks got them on the show as much as their penchant for crying, yelling, and making-out.

Josh does make a very good point: that girls are sensitive about their bodies. It’s something that all guys should know and respect but unfortunately some guys don’t.

Like Ty.

Does This Pen Make Me Look Fat?

Does This Pen Make Me Look Fat?

In a discussion about Playboy models, Ty makes the observation about Callie not being skinny enough for Playboy. Clearly upset, Callie goes outside and all the girls rally around her in a conversation worthy of The View.

I will say this, having met Callie and seeing her on the show- she’s is absolutely gorgeous, and she would be just my type. Ty thinks he’s being a realist by saying only skinny people make magazine covers. He’s actually wrong- being skinny may get you on covers but being famous helps out as well- I’ll be seeing you on the cover of Baltimore Weekly before your reality show fame dies out.

So how does the MTV wrap up this storyline? By dancing it out.

After a forced apology from Ty, the girls head on over to a dance studio for a Latin Dance class. Something else I’ve learned about girls from Dane Cook- sometimes they just want to dance. Boys? Well fuck boys.

Memorable Quotes

Possible reason Ashley may take up cock-blocking: “I love how we’re sexually frustrated but you’re not.”

Two Up

So far the season has been dominated by Andrew, Emily, and Ty- and their antics have ranged from entertaining to annoying. I will give Erika some props this week for getting some more face time on camera without causing drama… yet.

A few people out there are begging for more Josh and he didn’t get a whole lot of face-time in this episode, but I’ll appreciate the knowledge he dropped concerning women and self image.

Two Down

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Stop trying to control a girl who’s clearly too much like you: a player. You lose points with me for your weak attempt to be vulnerable in a bar and for pulling the asshole move of calling Callie fat. Oh ya screaming, “look at me bitch!” doesn’t work either.

I have to include her here because when she gets together with Ty it becomes this Heidi/Spencer- like mess that sucks the attention from other cast members and us viewers. We get it, you want to be free… and that you love black guys. You go you rebel you.

Look I Know That Place!

Sweetgreen: Local DC salad chain, unlike Callie I’m not a vegan- so I haven’t been there.

Washington Sports Club: The gym where the cast works out during their summer here, I love how their walk back from the gym often takes them by  Royal Palace, a place I’ll never forget.

The White House: How do you know you are living in Washington DC? When you get lost and somehow end up at the White House. Callie goes for a long run and got lost and is seen running up to the White House trying to find her way back. The same thing actually happened to me on my first day of work.

Lauriol Plaza: I’ve been dying to go there and try their margaritas- best in town I hear.

Flow Yoga Center: When Emily says, “I discovered this great dance class” I wonder if she meant, “the Producers found and signed-off on this great dance class to end our storyline on body image.”

Final Word

Melodramatic line of the week:

Emily: Did we break anything last night?

Ashley: Only each other.

Thank goodness for Obama graffiti, remember because the show takes place here in DC, Obama’s likeness needs to make an appearance once every 15 seconds.

Real World DC: Episode 2 Breakdown

Maybe that Panda hat can win over the ladies.

Last week I wondered where the drama was with Real World DC, after an informative but rather bland first episode I tuned in to the second episode looking for some more DC Drama. The drama was delivered- or should I say the action was delivered.

Real World Episode 2302, “Bipartisan Lovin” is aptly titled for it was focused on what we expect in a Real World season: hook-ups and drama.

Good to know the cast already know their roles, and started to pair up like The Great Flood was coming. Amongst all the flirting going on I was disappointed to see nothing with our rocker couple of Josh and Erika. You guys should of followed Mike’s lead (Mike put things on hold with his boyfriend in order to get the “full experience” of Washington DC.)

Now on to the drama!

Drama In DC

The Pimpin’ Panda

Hey let's go to the hot tub!

Hey let's go to the hot tub!

Out of the blue Andrew develops feelings for Callie (“She’s nice and she turns me on.”) I think if I was going to mack on someone in that cast it would be Callie: Ashley = Drama, Erika = Crazy, Emily = Stubborn. Too bad Andrew’s game isn’t working on her, in fact she gives him the relationship kiss of death during a confessional: “I like him like a brother.”

Guys everywhere are cringing just reading that.

Can Andrew game his way past it? Not when you practically beg and plead for a moment alone. It was painful to see him try and get a moment alone with Callie on the 4th of July. I think the game is over my dear panda.

So what would a Real Worlder do? Find some other chick to hook up with. No problem for Andrew who finds a classy (hey she was in Georgetown) blonde bimbo to take back to the house. In fact the hook-up couldn’t get more stereotypical:

  • Go out to bar, have women dance with you because you are being filmed
  • Bring back drunken ladies back to the house
  • Make-out with ladies
  • Invite them to the hot tub
  • Have roommates talk about the situation while you hook-up in your room
The Panda hat pays off...

The Panda hat pays off...

What is it about a Real World House hot tub that turns ladies on? I don’t think the Jersey Shore hot tub turns anyone on. Also the girl who Andrew brought back was named Krystal- a name I feel would be apropos for the show.

Update: It looks like Andrew actually snagged a quality lady. I found out that Krystal is a GMU Grad who is apparently a DC socialite and according to her friends– didn’t mind doing the Real World groupie thing.

But did Andrew get laid? Hard to do when the entire house is peeking in the doorway (Sign of immaturity #1.)

Not So Will And Grace

Looks like Ashley has her eyes set on Mike according to some lines said while walking down the street and some locked lips on the floor of Rhino Bar:

Ashley: “We like full tongue kissed.” (Sign of immaturity #2)

Mike quickly sheds his fear of DC Gay bars...

Mike quickly sheds his fear of DC Gay bars...

So when Mike meets a nice boy at Cobalt and brings him back to the house was she jealous? Well she says she wasn’t and regrets making out with him to set-up that idea. She further explains on Twitter:

“Heres the deal I look at Mikey like my gay hubby. Hes a HOT GUY so I get drunk, I’ll kiss him, I’ll cuddle BUT IT’S BECAUSE hes not a threat”

She goes on to explain that she even leaves him condoms on his bed.

So is this a lame, engineered storyline or could Ashley have the hots for Mike?

Two Bulls Locking Horns

We know where this is going...

We know where this is going...

Emily and Ty was quickly introduced as a possible item early in the first episode, so how are things developing? To me it’s kinda boring. In the episode Emily and Ty finally kissed after Ashley and Mike broke the roommate make-out barrier. But seriously what kind of kiss was that? It’s was pretty lame in my eyes. A quick smooch then Emily runs off to her girls. What are we in 7th grade? (Sign of immaturity #3)

It appears to me that the Ty, Emily relationship is going to be very contentious. Ty has lots of game and will continue to talk the talk. Emily has expressed how non-committal and stubborn she is. Wow it’s like two guys trying to hook-up. It’s going to be this continual chase between the two which will most likely end in hooking-up in various parts of the house.

Overconfident/Creepy line of the night comes from Ty: “You will have sex with me.”

Memorable Quotes

Andrew on Callie: “She’s my whale and I’m Moby Dick… oh wait was Moby Dick the whale? What’s that- Captain Ahab… and she’s my dick.”

Erika to Krystal’s friend: “If you come back to the house with our boys you better just expect to be partially naked by the end of the night.”

Ashley to Krystal’s friend: “We don’t judge… no I lie- I judge.”

Two Up

He is a Pimpin’ Panda- what else can I say? He already pulled off the girl in the hot tub move we all dream about.

He popped his DC Gay Bay cherry and interviewed with the HRC (however I don’t know T-shirt and shorts is the right attire for a job interview.)

Two Down

Josh & Lauren

Guys, roommates are hooking up all over the place- where are you two!?!?!

Look I Know That Place!

Rhino Bar: I went there to see the Red Sox win the World Series, but otherwise I don’t go down there that often. Good to know it’s a good place to get a lap dance on a couch.

Polo & Shorts? Not really interview material.

Polo & Shorts? Not really interview material.

Human Rights Campaign: I’ve lived here for three years and it took me the longest time to realize what those blue and yellow bumper stickers were for.

Cobalt: Andrew tried putting on some make-up for his first gay bay experience. This look eerily close to what I did for Rocky Horror. What else happened at Cobalt besides Mike finding a make-out buddy? Elizabethany filmed a clip of Ty taking off his clothes that same night.

While Emily and her sister walked around for coffee I spotted one of those ghost bikes on the corner.

Thaiphoon: Due to it’s proximity the house it’s going to be in pretty much every porch shot.

The Diner: I hear it’s a good place to eat and I’ve visited it’s sister restaurant Tryst.

Final Word

On cutaways: Stop showing a B-roll shot of Adams Morgan and then show the cast in Dupont or Georgetown.

In one scene you see the cast going through Andrew’s closet, revealing the presence of a skunk hat. Andrew also sports a Moose hat as well. Does he have an entire zoo of animal hats?

RWDC Cast Members Emily, Ty, Ashley, and Callie with Chris Wiggins and Elizabethany (Photo: Alfredo Flores)

I don’t really watch The Real World.

When I was in college my roommate and I would head on over to the female side of the floor of my dorm to hang out and watch episodes of Real World Philadelphia, but besides that I haven’t watched a whole lot of the granddaddy of Reality TV. My inexperience with the show doesn’t make me feel too alienated since many Washingtonians tuned in for the first episode of The Real World DC, some for the first time ever or first time in a long time. Having a reality show filmed in your urban backyard kind of has that effect. The show did slightly better in the ratings compared to the previous season, Real World Cancun, no undoubtedly thanks to many locals who wanted to see how the 23rd season of the Real World would profile DC.

I caught the first episode at the Metromix Premiere Party over at BlackFinn. There I met up with Suburban Sweetheart and Emily Goodstein and watched the first episode with members cast and other members of the media. Party organizers Elizabethany and Chris Wiggins were pleased to see the small downtown bar packed with fans.

It was really interesting to see the cast react to their first glimpses of themselves on television. Ashley shed a few tears while watching an emotional heart-to-heart between her and Ty. The cast must also be stuck in Real World mode, many Tequila shots were taken while watching the season premiere.

Just hanging out with the RWDC cast (Photo: Alfredo Flores)

After the episode the cast stuck around BlackFinn to watch the after show, mingle with bar patrons, and of course- take more Tequila shots. The cast then high tailed it to Halo to meet up with fellow cast member Mike Manning who was hosting an after-party to the premiere party.

After talking with the cast in earlier, it looked as if this latest season of The Real World is going to attempt to go back to its roots of less hot tub, more issues. This is Washington DC- where people greet each other with a handshake and political affiliation; wouldn’t a DC reality show be all about the serious issues of our Nation’s capital? So did the first episode live up to those claims? Almost. The show introduces us to eight strangers who say the right things (Ty: “I’m one of those people that wants to put their foot in every door.”) but reveals themselves with typical reality show ambitions. Cast member Erica can be seen in an interview talking about expanding her music career and Andrew’s top goal in DC: get laid.

The cast was quick to introduce drama with a dinner-time argument over religion, but in reality it was just a stubborn shouting match between Ty (who doesn’t believe in God) and Mike (a devout Christian.) Was there any breakthrough moments that explored the issue? Not really, the tense moment resembled two sports fans arguing over who’s football team was better.

The first episode succeeded in introducing us to this year’s slate of characters- but the jury is still out on if Real World DC will be a a stand-out amongst forgettable season in recent years or a feeble attempt to go against the Jersey Shore standard reality drama.

The Drama In DC

So with the first episode of the show we meet the eight roommates, let’s scope them out.

RW-Andrew01-035Andrew Woods
21 – Denver, CO

You either think he’s funny or obnoxious, nevertheless he comes off as the biggest personality on the show. He’s funny in a complete weirdo kind of way and will do or say anything to be funny/get attention. Viewers saw him lie to Emily and Callie about his hobbies and background- but did anyone catch the very subtle “Oh! A lesbian!” line he said when Erika and Josh were walking up to the house? At least we don’t have to worry about him being racist- since he thinks that anyone that enjoys basketball can’t be a racist. His main objective on the show is to get laid, a very noble goal for someone on The Real World, however we’ve already seen his game and while the cast members brush it off as lame I think he has a good chance to get women with the whole funny guy/complete geek act he has going as he doesn’t go overboard with it. Plus having cameras around will help him too. Drama level: Low – He’ll walk around DC in that Panda hat, try and make funny jokes, and perhaps say something inappropriate to a cast member or woman- but he’s a wannabe lover- not a fighter.

RW-Ashley01-004Ashley Lindley
22 – Houston, TX

The first cast member to be introduced, we are told that she’s a big fan of Barack Obama and was a delegate in the 2008 election. However her big mouth and tendency to snoop on the other cast mates puts her in line to be the house drama queen, not house politico. In the first episode she reveals a past where she physically abused by her father and has a very contentious rapport with Ty. However those that watched the after show saw a different rapport between the two, perhaps a sign of things to come later this season. Drama level: High – She has all the makings to start or get involved with every situation in the house.

RW-Callie01-004Callie Walker
21 – Huntsville, TX

What I’ve noticed about Callie is that she prefers her left side in photos. She also often does this raised eyebrow, chin up kind of pose in a lot of pictures. The shutterbug from San Houston State not only looks good in front of the camera but loves to take photos behind the lens as well. She’s a vegan and we are led to believe that she’s somewhat conservative (even though she’s told me that she’s socially liberal.) Drama level: Low – Her personality doesn’t really stand out too much and I have a bad feeling that she’ll be easily overshadowed by the bigger egos in the house.

RW-Emily01-038Emily Schromm
20 – Columbia, MO

Wait she’s only 20? Unless she turned 21 over the course of the season does this mean she didn’t partake in the many trips to the DC bars? It’s not like she doesn’t want to drink.  Now a former member of a fundamentalist Christian cult she’s all about rebelling and living the life she didn’t have in her earlier years. She’s all about adrenaline and dating both women and men. She’s also got a nose piercing and a tattoo- both signs she’s a rebel. Like Callie she comes across as quiet but she conveys this real down to earth attitude that makes her one of the cooler heads in the house. Drama level: Low – I don’t think she’s going to be starting any fights but she’s already shown a liking to token hot black guy Ty.

RW-Erika01-023Erika Lauren Wasilewski
21 – Chicago, IL

In her audition tape she describes herself as, “a little crazy, and a lot of rock and roll.” We also heard her sing- which I think is good but not great. In the first episode we saw her rock and roll side and her love for rock and roll people- like Josh. She also says she’s only cheated on a boyfriend once- and that was when she started dating her current boyfriend. Erika’s bf I got news for you- she’s probably going to make it two times. Drama level: High – we haven’t seen her crazy side yet but I know it’s going to come out and when it does, it’s going to be amazing. Also we know anybody that comes on the show dating somebody is just asking for infidelity.

RW-Josh01-017Josh Conlon
23 – Philadelphia, PA

Andrew described him best, he’s a coolest guy in the room and he knows it. He hails from Philly where he worked at Pat’s King of Steaks. He’s an aspiring musician and just looks like he lives and breathes the rock and roll life style. It was great to see him in the confessional holding an entire bottle of Jack Daniels. Right now we don’t know a whole lot about him yet but we did see that he has a girlfriend. Good thing that the two cast members with significant others already have crushes on each other. That’s going to go over real well. Drama level: Medium – Maybe he’ll get in a fight but he seems too cool minded for that, but that girlfriend back home situation is looking mighty tempting for some drama.

RW-Mike01-016Mike Manning
22- Thornton, CO

The big revelation at dinner on the first night was that he’s Bi. I have a feeling he’s definitely, “bi now, gay later.” He told me that he was a closet case before the show and you can see his slight uncomfort when he talks about it. He doesn’t want to be known for his bi-sexuality. Too bad you are on the show as the token bi/gay male. Besides that he comes off as a really nice guy, it makes you wonder how he got on the show in the first place. Drama level: Low – He’s somewhat naive when it comes to his sexuality and I see his awakening to the issues being the main storyline for him this season.

RW-Ty01-008Ty Ruff
22 – Baltimore, MD

I enjoyed the fact the other cast mates were hoping for the “hot black guy” to arrive and he walks up to the house just in time to satisfy the quota. A lot of people are already making reference to Ty also fitting the, “angry black man” role and I have to say he does come off very cocky and very out spoken. He’s already picking fights and if this trend continues- I see him starting many, many fights this season. Drama level: High – He will have his share of words that will spark much drama.

Look I Know That Place!

For the first episode the locals were pretty lame. Mike and Ashley met at Reagan National Airport, Emily and Andrew met on The Mall (so cliche), and Josh and Erika met at Union Station. Callie and Ty traveled to the house solo: Ty is seen coming out of the Dupont Circle Metro while Callie gets lost getting to the house.

Their first dinner? Buca Di Beppo. Yes a chain restaurant. There’s been a lot of snarky remarks about the choice but it’s only the first night and as a video producer there’s only so many places that would of allowed MTV cameras inside. Also from a logistical standpoint there’s only so many places that could close off an entire area for the cast to eat privately.

Otherwise there were a good amount of B-roll shots including the Columbia and 18th section of Adams Morgan.

Final Word

The first episode did a lot of standard intros, nothing exciting, nothing really dramatic. Let’s hope the next few episodes can hold DC’s attention before we start waiting for The Real Housewives of DC.

Real World DC Cast On Twitter, Jersey Shore, and Tonight’s Premiere

Tonight the story of eight people in Washington, DC finally hits the screen.

I’ve been covering The Real World DC since move-in day, and now after months of sightings, stories, and run-ins; it’s time for Washington, DC to make its reality show debut on MTV.

For those interested in making an event of the night there are several options for you to choose from.

Perhaps the biggest viewing party will be at BlackFinn DC, where friend of Metblogs/RWDC Super-Fan Elizabethany is hosting a Premiere Party with Metromix DC, and Chris Wiggins of @RealWorldDCNewz. Real World DC cast members Ty, Ashley, Callie and Emily will be on hand to party as well as The Kane Show’s Samy K and WUS9’s Angie Goff, who will be presenting the “DC Lottery presents Best of 2009 Show” earlier that night. There’s no cover and there’ll be drink specials including $5 house wines and $3 Coors bottles. The party starts at 8 PM.

Afterwards BlackFinn attendees will get perks to move over to the after party hosted by RWDC cast member Mike Manning over at Halo.

Over at Tattoo Bar, RWDC Cast Member Josh Conlon and his band Wicked Liquid are hosting a party as well. There is a $5 cover and $20 buys you “VIP” access to Josh, so you can tap him on the shoulder when he’s actually on the screen. Tattoo’s event starts at 9 PM.

Nellie’s Sports Bar, a regular stomping ground for the cast this summer, will be hosting viewing parties every Wednesday.

Earlier this month I got to talk with Real World Cast members Mike Manning and Callie Walker to talk about the show as well as other current happenings.

My interview with Mike happened days after DC’s vote to legalize Gay Marriage. As a bi-sexual male, Mike spent his summer on The Real World working with the Human Rights Campaign and was back in DC to attend a banquet celebration of the event. He hopes that this historic move leads the way for other states to do the same, “it’s an issue that’s really important to me, close to me… it sends a message to the rest of our nation that if our Nation’s capital has the balls and the respect to allow people that love each other to marry each other, other states should take the message and follow it.”

On the show you’ll see Mike talk with lawmakers on The Hill about LGBT issues and he really learned a lot about himself as well as the issues during his time here, “I was a closet case [prior to the show] and I wasn’t expose to those issues in Colorado, so everything I learned in DC was new and I’m really grateful that HRC took me under their wing.”

Mike will graduate from the University of Northern Colorado this May.

Real World DC cast member Callie Walker

Real World DC cast member Callie Walker

For Callie Walker fame hasn’t affected her life yet, we talked right after she got off a shift waiting tables at a cafe close to her school, Sam Houston State University.

Callie spent her summer in DC working for the now-defunct Washington Blade as a field photographer. A native of Texas, she told me about how much she enjoyed all the diversity DC had to offer: from food to cabbies. “My favorite thing to do is to find out where my cab driver is from- they are all from different places and they all have different stories,” Callie says.

Her new found celebrity hasn’t hit the small town where she goes to school but outside it she’s already attracting attention. At the nearby mall, she’s already been recognized while shopping at Victoria Secret.

The political atmosphere of The District played a role in Callie’s time here and told me she really discovered politics and now identifies herself as a social liberal.

Thanks to Twitter and blogs, DC was well aware of the cast’s where-abouts at all times. To which the cast found somewhat annoying, “it was nuts,” Mike told me,  “we’d walk down the street, we’d go to a restaurant and 100 people would be there five minutes later because they got a tweet that we were in the area.” Callie also found it bothersome but realizes it’s a sign of the time we live in, “we’re just trying to be normal and experience DC normally and I think that maybe that took some of it away from us but I understand that’s generation we are- we’re the social media generation.”

In an ironic turn of events, most of the cast now embrace the tool that was the cause of so many headaches earlier. Most of the cast members can now be found on Twitter tweeting with all their fans.

MTV has been in the spotlight for another show that’s been a recent hit: Jersey Shore. Both Mike and Callie told me they’ve watched the MTV reality hit and had mixed reactions. ” It’s absolutely ridiculous,” Mike says,  “you have one guy that looks like Sonic the Hedgehog and he owns a tanning bed in his house and one little girl that lives off of alcohol, she looks like a Gremlin.” Even though Mike doesn’t think he’d fit in at the Jersey Shore house, he did reveal to me his favorite cast member on the show: Ronnie.

Callie on the other hand is a fan but prefers a different guy on the show, “I think the cutest one is not Ronnie, not the fist pump guy [Vinny], not The Situation, but the other one [Pauly D].

So will we see the Real World DC cast back on MTV after the show ends? Mike and Callie both told me they would love the opportunity if it came and Mike told me he would definitely do The Ruins if they came calling, “if somebody wants to pay me to jump out of a helicopter and grab a flag- I’m all about it.”

DC Video: Sneak Peak At Episode 1 Of The Real World DC

My friends at MTV shared with me this short clip from the upcoming premiere of The Real World DC. In it cast members welcome Callie with a pretty lame attempt to fool her that she walked up to the wrong house.

Guys I don’t think that’s going to work when she clearly sees the cameramen in the house.

The clips also reveals some early tensions in their political views as Callie reveals her favorite President, but claims to still be “to be like in between.”

Stay tuned to Metblogs all year round for more sneak peeks at the Real World DC!

DC Video: Real World DC Trailer Released

Obligatory cast photo on The National Mall.

Just in time for the holidays only a couple of months since The Real World DC cast left The District, MTV has already launched the website for the latest installment of their flagship reality series complete with trailer.

Of course when you are telling “The true story of eight roommates in DC” you need to get an obligatory shot of President Obama and of course that’s the first thing you see in the trailer. Lots of “Real World” obligatories are to come as most of us locals have heard various stories about the drama that’s gone on this summer, and if you haven’t the trailer pretty much covers all the bases. Everything from roommate hookups, relationship cheating, and partying in Dupont Circle can be expected after watching the trailer. It basically looks like what you expect The Real World to be with an occasional politician cameo or DC backdrop for the debauchery.

There is a glimmer of hope that past all the drama and scandal the show could return to it’s roots as a progressive show that tackled big issues. Living in Washington, DC naturally makes you more aware of causes both political and social. The whole, “we’re a generation that can change the world” could mean that the show is less fluff and more substance.

But then again it’s only a matter of months before these kids are fighting other MTV Alumni on The Ruins.

The Real World DC premieres on Wednesday December 30th at 10 PM ET/PT. If you can’t wait til then check out RWDC fanatic Elizabethany and the stalkers fans at Vevmo, who already know way too much about the show and cast.

Real World DC Cast Long Gone But Peeks Inside The House Surface

Come December, you'll see this confessional backdrop all over MTV

Remember this past summer when that crazy group of kids moved into Dupont Circle and caused chaos for DC and MTV? Well as most of us can get back with our lives now that they are gone, we can expect them back on our TV screens soon.

NBC 4 recently talked with Executive Producer Jim Johnston and says the show should premiere around December 30th- just in time to watch reruns while nursing that New Years hangover.

The Washignton Post’s Dan Zak also got the chance to visit the house and the castmates and saw it all from themed bedrooms to coached up message points given by the castmates:

They came. They saw. They got good at Jacuzzi sex. They had the time of their lives, they say, in the $5.7 million mansion at 2000 S St. NW. D.C. is sooo great, they say, so driven and electric. They use “driven” and “electric” often to describe themselves and Washingtonians. There is a faint, stale whiff of prepackaged buzzword, like they’ve been coached to brand the production before it airs Dec. 30.

Zak offers short takes on each of the cast members, reporting that castmate Mike Manning may return to DC, taking a liking to the city after his experience working with the Human Rights Campaign. Zak also notes that in a trite attempt to look “DC” the entire place is covered in eagles:

Bald eagles are everywhere. Eagle statues prop up a glass coffee table with their white, feathery crowns. Bronze and ceramic eagles swoop out from the wall, mid-attack. It’s Norman Bates, with a dash of John Ashcroft.

The related video reveals that cast felt like being on “The Real World” was really hard and difficult. I can imagine what months of drinks, drama, and parties can do to your life. No wonder most end up re-signing with the network for future shows (how long before they end up on The Ruins 2?)

The Real World DC: Jumping The DC Shark?

Things finally got rowdy for The Real DC cast. While they easily lived up to the partying expectations with daily trips to bars around DC and make-out sessions with anyone and everyone; there was finally a fight worthy enough to make the MTV cut. On Tuesday night, there was apparently a fight between the girls outside Nellie’s. Tears were shed, crowds formed, and the producers had to intervene (but not before a few photos got leaked.)

Before this The Real World Cast has been relatively drama-free to the eyes of the many stalkers and fans. In fact the Real World DC cast has managed to assimilate themselves into young DC culture as best they can. They are shopping at Urban Outfitters, eating at CalTor (and Subway too), even taking a break from the many nightclubs to visit a divvy haunt like The Big Hunt.

They all have internships and jobs with NPO’s and media outlets and I guess you can say they participate in the random mass gatherings that sprout out from time to time.

I think the crowning achievement is their participation in a DC Kickball league, I think I have to admit it- they are doing all the things that are typical of young Washingtonians.

However they do live in a much nicer place, get access to all sorts of events and parties, and become instant celebrities everywhere they go. But besides all that they have jumped the DC shark.

But what are they missing? What else do they need to do to convince us they are becoming “regular young professionals” like us?
