DC Madam dead by apparent suicide

Barely a year after she forced a Deputy Secretary of State out of his job by selling her phone records to the media, authorities believe the DC Madam, Deborah Jeanne Palfrey, has committed suicide at her mother’s Florida home.

As DC Metblog alumnus brownpau points out, Palfrey’s Wikipedia page is already seeing a spike in edits.

What a waste. I’ve no doubt there’s human trafficking going on in the sex industry but high-end operations like Palfrey’s aren’t where. So at the end of it all we’ve:

    * spent Grod knows how much on the prosecution
    * seriously harmed the lives of all the women compelled to testify about their past employment with Palfrey
    * driven a woman to take her own life

and the lasting result? A quick look at the "erotic services" section of our craigslist shows over 330 postings so far today (and it’s only 5pm) with titles like "CARDATE ANYONE?" and a containing a picture of a woman’s naked ass and a phone number with "call for rates."

Good thing we’ve stomped out prostitution in DC.

Indeed. Aren’t you glad we regulate the sex lives of consenting adults?
