Greatest Local TV Commercials
Charlie DeMarco at thephatphree.com has put together a list of the 50 Greatest Local TV Commercials. DC is well represented.
Jhoon Rhee Self Defense comes in at number 50. As someone who watched the Jhoon Rhee commercials thousands of times in my youth, I say they should be in the top ten. In the writer’s defense, he says he wanted to start the list strong.
At number 41 is one of the worst Empire Carpet ads, dating from 1984. I’d place the various phone number jingles that Empire has ended all their commercials with for the last 30 years between war and cancer on the list of things I’d like to see gone from the world.
DC also provides one of the newest commercials to make the cut — the phenomenon that is the Eastern Motors rap comes in at number 14.
ARGH!!! I now have both the Eastern Motors AND Empire Carpet jingles stuck in my head.
The AA/BB rhyme schem of the Eastern Motors song is pretty great.
Ford, Hyundai, Chevy, Beemers and Mini-VANS.
Over 600 cars, trucks, SUV’s, are you listening, MAN?
Let Eastern Motors put you in a car to-DAY.
Let Eastern Motors finance it all the WAY.
Haha! As someone who grew up in the Chicago area to the “588-23hundred Empire” commercials, I was actually tickled to see the commercials here and realize they’d gone nationwide. The eight-hundred bit of the jingle throws me off now, though. One has to wonder if that guy is still really alive, though.
I didn’t have a chance to read the entire list but did TheaterVision starring Joe Jacoby make the cut?
Hahaha, that Joe Jacoby commercial should’ve been on the list but was not. Sadly, I can’t find it on youtube or anywhere else. It’s a classic though!
I loooove the Easterns’ commercials!!! Their awesome!
