But I Want to Eat Eels Every Day!

Today I walked the dog along Difficult Run, the beautiful, though not pristine, big creek that runs through Northern Virginia and empties into the Potomac at the eastern end of Great Falls Park. At what looks like a good fishing spot I saw this warning nailed to a fallen tree:


If you click through to the larger image you’ll see that it gives a bit of advice — don’t eat the eels you catch there more than twice a month. Most of what I know about fish I’ve learned in restaurants and before today I did not know there was such a thing as the American Eel, or that they’re local, or that people make meals of eels, or that doing so might give you cancer. Now I know.
