DC’s Super-Pigmented Squirrels

When I told my friend Eric from Boston that I had moved back to DC he said, “My band played there once but the only thing I remember about it is that the squirrels were totally black. It freaked me out.” Eric has done a lot of drugs and gets freaked out easily.

He’s right though. Among DC’s standard gray squirrels there are many, like this critter, who look like they got caught in an oil slick.

You can thank the National Zoo for the black squirrels. WaPo did a story on the squirrels about a year and a half ago — http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/18/AR2005051802251.html

That’s a great article, thanks! I love this line about the retired professor…

“He used to smear a tree behind his Silver Spring home with a mixture of peanut butter and Valium and then tattoo the squirrels that he found passed out below.”

And I thought I had some weird hobbies.

I first saw black squirrels while visiting Toronto. They were fighting over beer cans out behind a frat house. I wonder if they are as tasty as the gray ones.

Yeah, Toronto has them running amok. Not as many here, but still a good enough number that they aren’t too hard to find. Of course, they were imported here from Toronto back in the day.
