Tool Fans in the House?

After returning from an extended tour in Europe, arthouse rockers Tool are snaking their way down the east coast as we speak. They arrive in DC for a show at the Verizon Center on September 30th. I’ve seen them at least a half dozen times over the years and they always put on one a hell of a performance.

Lead Maynard is from Michigan, which is part of the reason I’ve seen them so often. The last time (see the ticket stub) was the day after 9/11. He was scheduled to move on to a venue in Ohio the next day, but cancelled it and played in Grand Rapids on the 12th instead, honoring our tickets. Somewhat subdued, and a little emotional (which is uncharacteristic for Maynard), the show went on and it was great.

I’m getting a little too old for arena rock concerts, but what the hell, one last shot?

If they were playing anywhere but Verizon Center (still MCI Center to me) I’d be all over this. My last time seeing Tool was there and the experience was a nightmare. MCI Center is the worst venue.

That said, if you are going – don’t miss openers Isis – they are flippin’ phenomenal.

I would LOVE to see them in a small venue, a club or something. Hence my hesitation. Arena shows packed full of children dressed all in black are no longer my cup. Hmmm… Never heard of Isis, thanks for the tips.

ISIS are worth getting there early for. They only get a half hour set, but they rock. The vocals put some people off but they are a largely instrumental band anyway, so if harsh vocals are not your thing then don’t worry, the vocals only come in every now and then. I am flying up from FL for the show and ISIS is half the reason I am making the trek.
