A Little Case of Metro Envy

I just stumbled across this Metro Bits list celebrating metro art and architecture. There’s 40 cities singled out of the 161 that have underground metro systems. DC makes the cut.

Still I feel like we’re the Plain Jane at the supermodel party. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been desensitized to DC Metro’s artistic stylings by thousands of trips–though I don’t know that I ever took five seconds to appreciate G. Byron Peck’s mural at Metro Center. I can’t help but feel this might be an East Coast thing… our lives are scheduled down to the minute and we’re too busy getting from place to place to appreciate the aesthetic we do have.

Compared to the tube or the Paris metro, DC metro is one of best I’ve ever been in.

    – clean (as long as people don’t spit on the floor or leave their McDonald’s soda cups on the benches and use the R2D2 bins http://dc.metblogs.com/archives/2006/08/welcome_back_my.phtml)
    – expansive space (I feel a little claustrophobic in the tube)
    – in summer, the temps are comfortable

Yes, metro sometimes has its quirky troubles but overall, I love DC because of the metro system.
