Turned around by the Park Police

One of the nice things about this four day weekend has been having a lot of free time for cycling. From Pentagon City, I have taken in rides along the Four Mile, W&OD, Mount Vernon and Rock Creek Park trails, covering two counties, three cities, and one District of Columbia. I have crossed both Key Bridge and Roosevelt Bridge this weekend.

Today, for some variety, I planned to ride across Arlington Memorial Bridge and down to Haines Point and back across on the 14th Street Bridge. However, the Park Police have the bridge closed off Memorial Bridge to all possible traffic. I can understand wanting to keep cars from using the bridge, but cyclists and pedestrians too? It seems like overkill to me. Not only that, I could not even get to the 14th Street Bridge from the Rock Creek Parkway Trail because it was closed at Memorial Bridge.

Shouldn’t the Park Police be encouraging people to walk and bike rather than drive or further burden Metro?
