new tech at the post office

Check this out: there is now automated self-serve at the post office. Spotted at the 14th and L streets branch, this little kiosk will weigh your mail and take debit or credit for payment.

Before you get too excited, results are mixed. Several people defected from the shorter kiosk line to the longer normal line claiming that the self-serve line was too slow.

Thats nice to know. What do you know?

Nice to see that these Kiosks are finally making it to your neighborhood. They have been here in Manassas for a couple of years now. Very convienent during holiday rush and when you want to do some mailings on the off hours.

We’ve got one in Alexandria that’s available 24/7. Great for when you need to mail a package and can’t rework your schedule around the post office’s hours.

We’ve had one for a few years out here in Fairfax — It’s been fine — once you start using it you probably won’t want to join the normal line again (at least I haven’t since)

We’ve had em here for a long while as well, the only issue with them is their lack of support for some kinds of shipping (like Media Mail) and the PO’s post-anthrax psychosis about packages over a certain size. So even if you use that thing, you have to hand the package to a person. I didn’t realize psychos and terrorists were unable to look a postal employee in the eye, but apparently that’s the magic solution…
