Night Night Z104, Hello WGMS
Z104, purveyor of crappy morning shows and more commercials than I thought was possible on a “music” station, is now gone. They shut down at noon today to make way for WGMS, DC’s highly regarded classical music station. Subbing for Matthew Blades will be James Bartel. Of course, that’s one less competitor for Elliott in the Morning, and the rock and roll music the kids these days like to hear. Last year, it was WHFS turning into El Zol, this year it’s Z104 turning into WGMS.
The big question remains: Who will broadcast the Nats games this spring?
The big answer for Nats games on the radio is: the new Washington Post radio station!
Charlie Slowes is coming back for the broadcasts, but Dave Shea is not (boo).
Z104 No MORE!!! Does this mean that Matthew Blades will try for Sirius/XM or Clear Channel?? Careful Mornin Mess of HoT 99.5! How expendable are the jocks now days? The film Airheads DOES excist from what I’m hearing!! HFs becoming El Zol was 2005 heartbreak now look at 2006! No Howard Stern meaning The Junkies vs.====>E.I.T.MZ104 No MORE!!! I hope Matthew goes back to broadcasting school to, say, acquire some talent. Radio Voices have always been expendable, it’s not a talent that’s unique.
Bummer to see that Dave Shea is leaving the broadcasts, but I have really enjoyed Charlie Slowes.

Now it’s only Mix 107.3 & Hot 99.5 left for bubblegum pop YEAH!!! They’re fadin FAST!!!
I wish somebody would do away with Jack Diamond and that whole 107.3 morning crew… like fingernails on a chalkboard. ew.
Hey am I the only person that liked z104? I like the other stations too, but where else am I going to listen to a cool station that plays music like Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Howie Day, etc?
I can live without morning shows… but I too loved the music of Z104 – I am sick of finding a station – getting addicted – just to have the corporates yank it away from me. Its XM satelite from now on! Michelle – XM 22 has Mraz, Howie Day, etc. Great listen!
Please note: WGMS is not “highly regarded.” It is highly profitable, yes, but has the same miniscule playlist and same avalanche of commercials that all pop radio stations have. Musical wallpaper and valium for the office day, that’s all.
I would consider it fairly highly regarded. While not a regular listener (I rarely listen to FM anymore), it’s not like they only play the famous composers’ most famous pieces all day.
Z104’s website says that you still have 107.3, 99.5, and DC 101. I’m not interested in classical, 107.3 plays too much pop, 99.5 is a little too urban for me, and 101 is a little edgy. Z104 music was just right. This happened to a York, PA station I could tune into about a year ago. Played the same kind of music z104 had. Now what? I’m a big Elliot fan but the morning show lasts only so long.
Can’t abide Elliott. Couldn’t abide Blades. Can’t listen to talk. Classical puts me to sleep. Need to replace my broken tape adapter so I can have the iPod on the way to work, clearly.
I’m going to miss Whitney the most. Loved the rants! Does anyone know her last name? I’ve had no luck finding her by Googleing Whitney Z104. I’m hoping to locate whatever radio station she gets hired by.
