The Cheese Stands Alone

I think I’m starting to become lactose-intolerant. It’s happened to my mother, my brother, and now potentially me. This is a total tragedy given my family nickname is the dairy fairy. I love dairy. I could be a poster child for the
American Dairy Association. But last night I over-indulged in dairy delights and was punished by indigestion and freaky dreams all night. But it was so worth it…

I went to Bistro Bis in the Hotel George with some co-workers. Hurrah, the boss is treating us! It’s great people-watching in the swanky bar upfront – like trying to figure out whether the May-December couple next to you is actually a couple – and that continues in the warmly lit dining room. There’s the distinct political power vibe of greying distinguished suits tempered by hipster hotel guests that makes for an interesting mix.

Everyone seemed pleased with the French cuisine (though I was too much of a wimp to try the sweetbreads!) but it all seemed a bit rich to me. The enormous bowl of lobster bisque that I started out with was delicious but far too large a portion – and of course once you start slurping down butter and cream there’s no stopping.

I think you could easily skip dinner and go straight to the cheese course. You’re presented with a laundry list of cheeses to choose from to create your own plate in varying denominations, or you could just have the fromager create a plate for you. You’re presented with a plate of luscious cheese and a plate of accompanying breads, crackers, and condiments. A dairy fanatic like me then goes into ecstasy. I went for an all-Italian plate ranging from creamy butter to pungent blue to salty – I’m salivating just remembering it.

However, after all that bisque and all that cheese, I spent the night tossing and turning and moaning in bed, clutching my stomach and begging my body to forgive me, I really will be a good girl and eat only sparse plates of greens and soothing broth for the rest of my life. Really.

    You should have tried the bernaise sauce from the always famous Bistro Steak Frites. Did you know that the butter used in the bernaise sauce is the same butter that is recycled from breakfast. Whatever guests leave on their plate from breakfast, lunch and dinner is nicely recycled from previous guests. Nevermind that someone else has already used the butter once before, well, at least some of it. Its ok though, there is some cooking involved and I’m sure that bacteria and oral germs are killed in the process… I hope…

    mmmm… love the sweetbreads. And I’m a vegetarian! So, I guess I love[d] them…
