Cab Fare Going Up

Well, the period between surcharges is over. The $1 surcharge that ended on the 4th may be gone, but now we’ve got a $1.50 surcharge per ride. The surcharge lasts 120 days, or, until January 7th, 2006. Yet another reason to take Metro, or walk. Cabs here just aren’t worth riding in, unless you’re totally hammered.

I no longer consider cabs to be affordable in this city. Between rising fares and the crazy zone system, that not even the cab drivers understand half the time, I never feel I’ve gotten a fair deal. And the DC Taxi Commission is insane — I filed a complaint about a taxi driver who was confrontational and aggressive, and was told he’d broken no rules. Brilliant.

Yeah, I used to use cabs a lot. Now I just have to endure more time-consuming late-night Metro rides. The Post today said that Metro ridership is up, though (which is assumed to be due to energy costs) — encouraging, since we’re starving for better service here.

(BTW, I’m not a big fan of the no blogspot policy on URLs here.)

Sorry about that Christian, but there’s a good reason for that. Most of the blogspot URLs that were posted to this and the other metroblogging blogs were splogs and we see no reason to support an organization who allow so many spammers to operate with impunity.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

What?! Another f%*king fare increase?! Its now $7 for a one-zone ride and drivers are still moaning they can’t make a living. Punks, its cuz for $7 I’ll be taking the bus, walking, or biking and you’ll be there idling your engine hoping for a fare.

Not even NYC taxis are so expensive!

I’m fine with the increase. I use cabs a lot and it’s always worth the money for me. I go from wisconsin avenue to the hill. It’s a long trip and driver’s don’t much like making it. But I’m fine with the fair when I do get a driver who will make the journey.
