Why is this Sidewalk Closed?

There it is ahead of me. Yet another closed sidewalk in DC. With new building sprouting like mushrooms after the years-long rain of cheap lending rates, more and more sidewalks are closed for construction. Closed a little too easily and early if you ask me.

This is the sidewalk outside my building. The building is scheduled for a new face lift later this summer, but already they have the whole sidewalk blocked off. Not for construction crews of equipment, not to survey the site, not even to clean the building face. No, the sidewalk is closed already for the benefit of those little orange cones.

Lucky guys those cones. A whole sidewalk to yourself. Nice. I wish I could have that much DC real estate for nuttin. Hmm.. that gives me an idea. I wonder how much fencing costs? I bet I could build my own sidewalk closure for cheap & then rent out the space to homeless folk. Hell, I could live there myself. Be cheaper than commuting!

Back at GW I had a “friend” who collected unnecessary orange cones whenever he passed one while walking home from bars and parties. This “friend” of mine had to unload about 150 orange cones at the end of the semester so he made a giant pentagram out of them on GW’s quad. Then he spent an amusing afternoon watching puzzled people walk around them.

    Is that 15th between L & M?

At least they finally stuck in a nasty jersey barrier between those of us who walk and the traffic.

Just looked – they’re doing something out there now. It looks like they might actually start work soon.
