DC Tri Club Tries Hard for You

Now that’s nice. The pain is finally gone from last weekend’s odyssey: the 2005 New York City Triathlon, an Olympic distance race that had me swimming 1,500 meters (almost mile) in the Hudson River, bicycling 40 kilometers (almost 25 miles) on the Henry Hudson Parkway to the Bronx and back, and running 10 kilometers (just over 6 miles) through Central Park.

A triathlon that taxed my physical limits several times as I dashed across Manhattan in 2 hours and 30 minutes, a triathlon that I only finished thanks to the great help and support of the DC Triathlon Club.

Formed a few years back to help solidify a loose affiliation of triathletes, the DC Tri Club is now the premiere triathlete club in Washington. Premiere in so many ways, not the least of which was an amazing showing at last weekend’s Diamond in the Rough East Coast Championships.

While I wanted to be there, my date with fate in NYC drew me to the Big Apple to face my cousin in an ego-duel to the finish. Even so, I was sad to miss the Diamond race since the DC Tri Club had over 160 club members in the race. Yes, 160 people crazy enough to do Olympic distances over, around, and through Perryville Community Park in Maryland.

DC Tri Club accomplished this feat by spending the last six months coaching, motivating, and supporting its members through weekly workouts, monthly happy hours, and even a practice triathlon. The leadership and the people pulled us when we were down, pushed us when we slacked, and taught us when we errored, all with the firm lovin’ any good athlete needs.

Thanks DC Tri Club, thanks for everything and thanks most of all for helping me best my cousin by 17 very long, very good, very proud minutes.

Now if you wanna join this cool club, come out to our next brick, ever Saturday morning at 8am at Haines Point, or our next happy hour:

Congratulations Wayan! Once upon a time, I was a competitive swimmer (before bad shoulders hit…) and I understand what it is to do the triathlon. Well done!
