Saint Paddy’s In DC

Oh yes, it’s here. That awesome Irishman’s dream. It’s not about parades. It’s not about four-leaf clovers. It’s not about anything except the Guinness. So tomorrow, when it comes time to get your drink on, be safe about it. Take Metro, or call a cab. Safe Rides will be operating after 4pm and until 4am, so give that some consideration.

Start Early

You can always start early. Radio Stations Z104 and DC 101 will be having Pre-Paddy Events beginning tonight at the 4 Ps in Northwest (on Connecticut Ave.) and continuing with Kegs and Eggs at Lulu’s.

Drink Often

St. Paddy’s Day is the one day of the year I will even consider paying a cover charge (I need to pay you to drink? Yeah, whatever. I can drink at my own home, thanks), but you’re going to want to stick with one bar this year, since cover charges are gonna run you a ten spot. Yes. $10. To drink green beer. And wait for a skeevy port-a-john when you break the seal. Deal.

The Traditionals

Kelly’s Irish Times is the grandaddy of them all. Great atmosphere, but expect to be squeezed in like sardines. You may not get a real pint glass, but expect a damn good pour of The Plain.

The Dubliner is another old favorite. In the beautiful boutique Phoenix Park Hotel, The Dubliner’s got damn good beer, some of it brewed specially for them. Again, avoiding green beer? Go here.

Ireland’s Four Provinces DC and Ireland’s Four Provinces VA are both great options if you’re looking for a good stool to sit on and drink a ton of Guinness while listening to great music. Expect quality entertainment and food for your $10.

Ireland’s Four Courts in Arlington is newly expanded for this year’s festivities, so expect musicians and lots of partygoers.

The Chains

Pub-in-a-box chains don’t do a bad job on St. Paddy’s, and Sin É and Fadó are no exception. You’ll get a decent beer, and maybe, just maybe, some real Irish people.

New Scenes

Don’t miss Molly Malone’s in Clarendon. That’s right, it’s so brank-spanking new that Google can’t even find it, except on the Post’s review section. Good for a bit of Craic and some Guinness, if you don’t feel up to trekking down to the Courts.

Ri-Ra in Bethesda will be having Irish Stepdancers at 6p tomorrow. I dated one once, so I’ll be staying far away.

Best of all, have a great St. Paddy’s day!
