And so starts The Aristocrats, definitely not to be confused with the lovely children’s film “The Aristocats.”

“The Aristocrats” is a comedy documentary, the brainchild of Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza, screened during the American Film Institute’s Silver Docs program last weekend.

It’s obscene, but it’s funny. Sara Silverman alone is worth the price of admission. Over 100 stand up comedians and writers participate either in telling the joke or talking about it. You’d think that everyone telling the same joke over and over throughout the film would get boring, but it’s definitely “the singer, not the song.”

In these days of increasing hysteria over media content, I applaud AFI’s decision to include this film in the Silver Docs festival. Think Film is releasing the movie, unrated, on July 29th. Go see it, but don’t be surprised by the content – there’s no nudity, no violence, but it is absolutely vulgar. And after you see the movie, you can go to the web site to add your own version of the joke for possible inclusion on the DVD.

Enjoy!

While the White House Easter Egg Roll was rained out on Monday, there are still eggs to be had. Well, the wooden White House souvenir eggs anyway. Tiffany and I walked up to the White House Historical Society’s headquarters on Jackson Place today and bought a few for the very reasonable price of $4 each. There are other sites charging up to $36 each, so know where you’re shopping. These are also the nice people who bring you the White House Christmas ornament each year if you’re ever looking for a special present for someone with no idea what to get. It was almost a nice day with the magnolia trees just getting past bud stage but not quite blooming yet. Now if only the sun would shine for more than 3 hours once a week…

Jerry Seinfeld will be bringing his stand up to the Kennedy Center on June 24 & 25th. Tickets are $51 – $81, and I can tell you it will be money well spent. I’ve seen a lot of stand up comedy in the past couple of years, and Seinfeld still holds the crown in my book (and yes, that’s over Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, and Dave Chappelle). But you don’t have to believe me, Tom Shales’ review of Jerry’s last Kennedy Center appearance said it was similar to seeing Michael Jordan in his prime.

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 1 to Kennedy Center members and April 15 to the general public. He sold out all four shows last time, so I wouldn’t wait too long if you want to go. Unfortunately, you won’t see me there as I’m out of the country that weekend, but I expect a full report.

So I know it’s forever in the future and no one wants to think about September yet, but go ahead and put Saturday, September 24th on your calendar to be on the National Mall. It’s the National Book Festival, sponsored by the Library of Congress and the First Lady. There’s not much there yet, but they’ll be updating with invited authors, volunteer opportunities, etc.

I volunteered last year in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Pavilion and was treated to the likes of Neal Stephenson, Neil Gaiman, Frederik Pohl, Connie Willis and Patricia Wrede (among others). I’ll post more information about volunteer opportunities as it becomes available, but it was an awesome day with so many great authors and people excited about books.
