Would that line catch your attention? If not, then you need to submit your own entry to Metro’s “Doors Closing Voice 2006″ contest. Metro is looking for a new voice to accompany the familiar closing door chimes and has decided to have the public submit their own recordings. I’m thinking it may be a little weird to hear myself tell myself that the doors are closing every time I ride the rail. Metro is looking for something a little more direct and attention-grabbing than the lovely woman we’ve all come to love who gently reminds that we’re about to sustain bodily injury if we attempt to sprint and jump through the closing doors.

What do you think the new voice should say?

Ever been to a Washington Wizards game and catch the eye of a cute girl sitting in the next section? You say to yourself, “Wow. I wonder if she’s single?” Well, now you can find out at the Washington Wizards Singles Night on Jan. 20 at the MCI Center! Begin the night in the Singles Lounge and end it with a fun-filled post-game Celebrity Dating Game! There’s a basketball game in there somewhere, too. Like the ad says, Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy an NBA game…and perhaps a little romance.

I just want to know…will any of the Wizard dancers be there?

Public Transit Heaven

Today I had a perfect public transportation experience. The stars were aligned, I tell you. I walk out of my apartment just as the bus rolls up to take me to the Metro; arrive at the top of the station stairs as my train is just coming to a stop; make my transfer at Metro Center the same way; get to Foggy Bottom and my bus is waiting for me at the top of the stairs. I get to work a full 15 MINUTES before I needed to be there.

And, vice versa!

Yes, the exact same thing happened on the way home, putting me through my front door a good 20 minutes before I normally get here.

See, the stars ARE aligned today…which also means that Texas will beat USC tonight!

Props to Coach Eddie Jordan of the Wizards for switching Jared Jeffries to guard and putting him into the starting lineup. Since the switch, “JJ” (it’s OK, I can call him that since we went to IU together) has 27 points and 25 rebounds (13 offensive) in 3 games. And, by the way, the Wizards are 3-0 during that stretch. Ever since watching him jump to the NBA from Indiana I have been waiting for Jared to break out like this. He’ll never be a superstar, but I believe Coach Jordan has now placed him into a great position to succeed and really help out this team.

Washington Ballet Cancels More Performances

The recent cancellation of most of the Washington Ballet’s yearly Nutcracker run is already producing ill effects. Without the revenue from the Nutcracker, the company has been forced to cancel some early engagements in ‘06 at the Kennedy Center and at the Joyce Theater in NYC. This includes something I was very much much looking forward to - a Bach/Beatles project. I hope they can resolve this strike or lock-out (depending on who you talk to) soon. Read more here.

Where Can a Guy Get a Steak in this Town?

OK, ladies and gents, quick and dirty post. I need recommendations for the best steak in DC. My mom is coming to town, and I really want to wow her with the best steak she’s ever had. I’ve been to Morton’s in Crystal City, but that’s it.

Let’s hear it. Where can I get a great steak in DC???

Kennedy Center dedicated to Youth and Families

Some of you may have noticed over the past couple of years a tremendous amount of construction going on in and around the Kennedy Center. In addition to expanding the parking garage and creating new plazas on the north and south sides of the building (among many other improvements), one of the final projects to be completed was unveiled on December 9th - a brand new Family Theater. This 324-seat theater found its home where the old AFI Theater used to be and will be used primarily for youth and family programming. I viewed it for the first time yesterday and it is absolutely state-of-the-art and acoustically amazing. Even if you aren’t young or have no children, I would highly recommend taking in a show at this new theater in the near future.

Black Friday

Are you one of the brave souls going out today to take advantage of the huge savings at the mall? If you are, you’ve probably been and are back by now. How was it? I will NEVER go shopping on Black Friday. I’ve worked retail before and still have the scars.

FREE DC! - A Little Rebellion Now

Tonight is opening night for the Venus Theatre Company’s World Premier production of A Little Rebellion Now, by Lisa Voss, directed by Deborah Lou Randall. From the official announcement:

D.C statehood activists form an uneasy alliance with IMF-World Bank protestors and attempt to secede from the Union. Branded as “terrorists”, the rebels soon find themselves facing down armed U.S. soldiers and resolve to stand their ground, asking the rest of the nation: without the right to rebel, are we really free?

The play runs from Nov. 17 - Dec. 11
Thursdays-Saturdays @ 7:30 p.m., Sundays @ 3 p.m.
Performed at the Warehouse Theater, 1021 7th St., NW

Hilary Hahn performs this weekend at the Kennedy Center

One of the brightest and most accomplished young classical violinists of today will be performing a recital this Sunday evening, Nov. 13, at the Kennedy Center, 7pm. A superstar at the tender age of 25, Hilary will be giving masterful performances of works by well known composers such as Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart, as well as by the more obscure Ysaye, Enescu, and Milstein.

She’s a Baltimore native so come out and show your support! Many tickets have just opened up for sale and range from $35 - $65. She is being presented by the Washington Performing Arts Society.
