The turnout was pretty good, and there were real ref’s and everything. The crowd got really into it. I didn’t register or play, but I had a great time ruiting on random people I met while I was there. The winner got $1,000 bucks, so people took it semi-seriously. Unfortunately once the contest was over, they started the base a pumpin’ and the crowd mix changed pretty . . . a good time was had by all.

My friends and I arrived late and still received great service and were cooked fresh food. We ordered several platters of meat and vegetarian dishes: This was great food, spicy and very flavorful. The vegetarian platter had lentils, greens, cabbage, stewed tomatoes and onions. The meat dishes included spicy beef, lamb, and chicken. One of the sauces on the beef was not unlike a sweeter mole sauce, especially since there were fresh jalape

I went to DC9 on Friday night and had a great time. The bar/club is on 9th and V, near the 9:30 Club. The place is small, but has comfortable booths and an awsome old bar. There are several beers on tap, but I stuck to the Schlitz cans (it’s the beer that made Milwaukee famous!). I hadn’t had Schlitz in a can since I was living in Chicago. DC9 has a dance club upstairs, and the Liberation Dance Party was going on while I was there. The music was great. Mostly indie, but some new wave and hip hop as well. The club charges a cover ($5), but we could hear the music fine from our comfy booth, and didn’t feel like dancing. I guess this place also hosts concerts, and seems like a more low key Black Cat. I’m definitely going to go back.

Meanwhile, I ate at a Thai restaurant near the MCI Center last night called Kanlaya (740 6th Street). First of all, it was nice to not eat in a chain restaurant while in that area. Second, the food was actually pretty good. Their tropical drinks are mixed heavy, and the food came out quickly and well prepared. I got a green papaya salad with shrimp as an appetizer. I

I ate at Mr. Chen’s Organic Chinese food the other day for the first time (basically at the corner of Calvert and Connecticut). I never really wanted to go into a basement restaurant on Connecticut when there are so many above-ground options all over, but my friend really wanted Chinese, and it’s super close to my apartment. What Mr. Chen’s lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for speedy service and pretty tasty food for the price. I won’t compare the food to any of the really good Chinese food you can get in Rockville or elsewhere, but my pork and Chinese eggplant was both spicey and quite colorful. My friend got a chicken and vegetable dish. All the veggies, although there’s no way to audit if they’re actually organic, were fresh and not over-cooked. We also got vegetable dumplings, which were nothing special, but came steaming hot and sticky. I also was able to get brown rice with my meal, which I enjoy both for taste and health. So, if their claim of organic produce is true, Mr. Chen’s Organic Chinese gets my thumbs up.
