DC Senator Paul Strauss Earns DUI

DC Democrat Shadow Senator Paul Strauss

DC Democrat Shadow Senator Paul Strauss

It’s every politician’s worst nightmare: being arrested two days before an election. Of course, DC’s Republican Chairman Robert Kabel has called for Strauss to “resign today,” but let’s face it, Strauss has nothing to worry about. His day in court is not until Friday, long after the end of the election. As if that matters. After all, Strauss stands in the company of former two-time Mayor and several-time Councilman Marion Barry, who spent time in jail between holding offices for crack-cocaine use, and Michael Brown, who will probably earn himself one of DC’s two At-Large seats on Tuesday despite having pleaded guilty for illegal campaign contributions made to Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA).

Strauss has never won an election for Shadow Senator with less than 70% of the vote, and don’t expect that to change despite his DUI and allegations of a lack of leadership in his lobbying activities in Senate. There is just no historical precedence for anything other than a landslide in his favor. Republican candidate for Shadow Senator Nelson Rimensnyder didn’t even get a comment in the Washington Examiner, let alone the Washington Post.

I’m going to go ahead and call this one for Strauss.
