Wow, all I had to do was wish for something, then do a little research and it turns out that Ford is already working on the E85/electric hybrid concept. http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=22474

I'm hoping my 1998 Subaru Outback will be the last gas only fueled car that I own. It gets 27 MPG on average. I only have about $4500 invested in the car. I would like to see an E85/electric hybrid (go corn power!) in the future that would be in the 40 to 50 MPG range. Hopefully one of the major auto manufacturers will come up with one, so that there would be a national dealer and service network to support the car.

I'd get one if I had the money. It's like an all-weather scooter. I understand they really do have good room inside for us tall guys. I am 6'4" as well and can am used to driving in a 1996 Corolla. One mm less space would be too small. I doubt it's smaller than that.

In the meantime, it's a toss-up between a Smart Car and a tuk-tuk for $4000.

How tall are you. On the Early Show anchor 6 foot 3 Harry Smith was scootin' around in it and claimed to have plenty of room. I have a couple guy friends who drive minis and they report no problems getting the girl!

Looks like a death trap to me. What do you think would happen if you tried to take it out on the beltway? :) Sometimes there's a white one parked in my neighborhood but I'm not sure if it lives there.

Sadly they're not really THAT cheap considering how much less car you get. I thought they'd be closer to motorcycle price range than cheap car price range:

The smart fortwo pure coupe starts at $11,590*, the smart fortwo passion coupe starts at $13,590* and the smart fortwo passion cabriolet starts at $16,590*.

* For 2008 models. Excludes tax, title, registration, destination charge, options and other dealer fees.

And the cheap version doesn't appear to come with a radio or air conditioning, so you really need to go up at least one model before the thing could really be considered a car replacement. It's just not cheap enough to be worth the goofiness and the small capacity.
