Well it's no fun discussing things with someone who feels picked apart and misinterpreted, and that certainly wasn't my intention in trying to discuss the matter. So I'll simply state - I don't see it that way.

Once again, one of my posts (or part of my post) has been picked apart and misinterpreted, by fellow authors no less.

My point wasn't whether or not prostitution or online dating are the same or that they should both be legal, my point is that she started a business, by choice, that involved illegal activities and got busted for it. She chose to end her own life rather than face the consequences and that's her choice, therefore I'm not sad about it. If we find out that some high up politician had her murdered, then I'll feel bad for her.

I might also add that adultfriendfinder.com is perfectly legal, again because a third party gets paid rather than the participants. I'm so glad we regulate the sex lives of consenting adults. < ./sarcasm >

I grew up in Florida, where sodomy laws were written so broadly that, until they were overturned across the country in 2003 by the Supremes, it was illegal for gays or straights to get a blowjob.

Perhaps this colors my opinion slightly, having been a lawbreaker as many times in my youth as I could manage, and leads me to think that just because a moronic law is on the books doesn't mean that two consenting adults shouldn't be free to do what they like with each other.

And "DoADCWhore.com" is different from Match.com because the participants exchange money between themselves, period. Every singles site I ever used before finding my darling girlfriend had an option to find "casual encounters" or "playmates," obviously an effort to connect with people to be nothing more than sex partners. When Match.com brings two people together neither of them get paid. What else is the difference?

She ran a business that everyone knows is illegal and then got caught. I'm not arguing whether or not I think an escort service is right or wrong, but yes, by choosing to run that sort of business she got herself into a mess. I think DoADCWhore.com is a liiiiiittle bit different than Match.com.

If I feel sorry for anyone, it's for her mom and the rest of her family having to go through the court proceedings and now this.

She "got herself into her mess" by connecting people who wanted to pay for sex with people who wanted to get paid for sex, and the IRS documents petitioning for search warrants (you can find them on The Smoking Gun) make no implication that she was failing to pay taxes on the earned money.

So she has killed herself to avoid being sent to prison - on our dime - because we've decided as a society that it's okay for people to fuck each other willy-nilly so long as they give it away for free. Palfrey gets tried and Match.com keeps on rolling.

I think that's just a waste. Of a life, of the lives damaged during her prosecution, and of the money spent prosecuting her.
