Why are they striking? Because they know that the zone system is a ripoff and they want to keep it. They are trying to keep a good thing going. With the current system, we are basically subsidizing the drivers at the expense of the passengers. There is a reason why DC has twice the cabs, per capita, as NYC - because it pays much better to be a cabby, thanks to the zone system. Cheers to Fenty for standing up to this injustice.

Yes Katy, I love having to pay 10 bucks to go less than two miles. I live near a zone line, so I've taken to having cabs drop me off 3 or 4 blocks away from my home. Sometimes they even pretend not to hear me and insist on driving those extra blocks to double their earnings.

Congratulations, Katy, you're an anomaly. We shouldn't have to be an expert bargainer or a freaking cartographer to get a decent fare in this town.

I love the zone system. It works great for me - I know what the rates are and am not shy about telling a driver who doesn't when he's wrong.

Well, perhaps they can get about 30% of them to stay home - that's the quantity decrease in cabs that a California traffic issues prof suggested the area could do with.

"not that you could get one [taxi] to actually stop for you, ever." Amen. Good luck calling them to pick you up too. They barely respond when they are "working," let alone when on strike.
