Petworth Metro Escalator Madness

This is the top of the only open Petworth Metro entrance this morning. The usual two escalators now just one with the left one under repair.

Up and down traffic has to squeeze past on one set of stairs to make morning destinations and the escalator repairmen have no timeline for fixing the situation.

And just what would be the situation if something happened in the Metrorail station at rush hour with only one escalator in one exit open for use?

I only hope we never need to find out.

You’d think that there would be a think tank thinking the worse possible scenarios and getting the word out to avoid potential disasters. What an idea.

Or you’d think that Metro might be concerned that there is only one escalator working, and double-time the fix to the broken one, communicating that to riders.

I really don’t understand how these technicians who fix escalators work. What exactly are they doing? And can they put up a sign to tell you how many days till the work is finished? My feeling is that they like to continue the work infinitely…like workmen who do road repairs. Most of the time I see three men standing around the one guy who is working.

The main thing is that there are inefficiencies and these inefficiencies can predict disaster. Aren’t there safety inspectors who are in the interest of the public?

Yeah, I was really shocked that I got a shrug for an answer to “When will the escalator be fixed?” Either he didn’t know or didn’t want to tell me.

Their was a similar problem at Capitol South. Their are 3 escalators leading into the station. The right one has been out of service for rehablation since early summer. It was supposed to be fixed last month. The middle escalator is frequently breaking down, and when that happens we have to walk down the cement stairs as their is only one running escalator.
