Congressman Charged with Assault?

Apparently, over the weekend, an 8 term Congressman from California was involved in an incident at Dulles Airport. The Congressman was fairly well upset with his delayed bag and managed to push his way past security and airline employees, who eventually pressed charges for misdemeanor assault and battery.

I mean, I understand get the frustration of the slow baggage claim, but there’s no reason to be a douchebag about it, Congressman…

It’s so hard to decide which side to be on: self-important congressman or airline customer “service” worker (it might have been an easier decision with a TSA employee)? It’s like the feud between the Moonies and the LaRouchites. Can’t they both lose?

As a rule, I have to side against the person who overreacts by filing assault charges for something that may technically be an assault but probably isn’t anything normal people would think of when they hear “assault”. So that means I’m giving at least a slight nod to Filner, Donna Brizill, and even Cynthia McKinney.

I agree with you KCinDC, I say its the airline people who over-reacted.

While I would never check my luggage, I can understand those that do being pissed off when it doesn’t arrive.

Add to it the crazy climate these days in airports, where the TSA arrests moms for spilling milk, and a mad guy pushing past the airline rep’s arm (she was not injured) could set her off to file assault charges.

Especially if she is union and gets days off or other special treatment because of it.

Whether Congressman Filner is a Democrat or Republican is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, this man has dedicated his entire life to public service, and was visiting out troops in Iraq. The DC Airport Authority is making it a practice to beat up, harrass, arrest and place false charges on ordinary, non-criminal citizens. Its shameful that Congressman Filner can be arrested for bogus charges, girls can be beaten and have bogus charges against them (the girl who was beaten and given a concussion at Reagan National Airport), and even mothers and babies can be harassed and threatened with criminal prosecution (the sippy cup terrorist). There needs to be a major investigation into these illegal practices at the DC Area airports.

Congressman Filner is my congressman from Calexico, California. I have met him in person his demeanor generally in the public is very calm & cool. He definitely has lots of experience dealing with crazy people, his district is filled with many people. His politics have generally always been very progressive and informed. I heard about Bob doing this and well, I just think it could happen to anyone. I’ve had bad traveling days. This guy most likely has to fly from the Imperial Airport in El Centro, then layover in either San Diego or Los Angeles before he can actually fly to D.C.

I think flying from the west coast to the East coast all the time can cause major stress. Arlington, VA congressman will never have this issue. East Coast congressmen have no idea how taxing flying from the West Coast is on the balance of the mind body and soul.
