Lima on K

It was 5:15pm, and I was sitting at my desk, pondering packing it in for the day. Then the IM came from a friend”

“Hey, where’s your office?”

I told him.

“Perfect. Come have a mojito. We’re at Lima at 1401 K.”

“Uh, what’s going on?”

“Nothing, we were just on our way back from a meeting and stopped for a drink. See you soon.”

This particular friend is known for the spontaneous invitations for adult beverages, but usually sangria on his back porch is involved, so I was curious.

As I rounded the corner at 14th and K, I didn’t even have to check the address to know I was in the right place, and what had inspired my friend to check Lima out.

Taking up a big chunk of sidewalk in the middle of K Street was a large expanse of extremely comfy-looking patio couches, umbrellas, and tables to put your drink on. It was like your well-off friend’s backyard, only positioned for K Street people-watching.

I settled in and my friend said, “Oh, wait until you see our waitress. It’s comical!”

“What about her?”

“You’ll just have to see.”

Just then, another server walked by- a tall, slender girl with long hair, in a blue tube dress, just barely long enough to be appropriate in public.

“OH,” my friend said, “It’s like a UNIFORM!”

I was about to ask him what he meant when our server appeared and all became clear. Another tall, slender girl with long hair, this one wearing what you could ALMOST call a skirt, but really more like a belt, a tank top trimmed in lace and leaving very little to the imagination… and four-inch spike heels. She came to set down a drink, bending carefully at the knee rather than the waist, teetering precariously on her impractical shoes, and asked me what I’d like. I ordered a mojito, and as she walked away, I clapped my hand over my mouth to supress the giggle.

“See what I mean?”

“That’s the most impractical cocktail waitress I’ve ever seen!”

“I suspect it’s… an economic decision.”

“You’re probably right.”

The mojitos were pretty weak for the $11 they charge, but I may well head to Lima again, if only for the sidewalk couches and entertainment.

I don’t think I could afford a drink there but I think I will be by to check it out at some point, if only for aesthetic appreciation.

Sounds like standard nudie bar economics to me. And with the mass exodus and the DC commissioners in a race to see who can be the most pious and say “not in my ward!” this may be the only option some men have…

Here’s another question – where else should we go? I mean, is there a good mashup of patio/sidewalk drinking for the city?
