M&M, I'll grant you that the seats aren't the most comfortable, but trying to claim that the THX-certified Dolby/Altec/JBL sound system isn't up to par? I think you're reaching a bit there!

Maybe they looked at Michael Bay's career and made a choice based on good taste.

Oh no! I can't sit in a very uncomfortable seat and watch it on a severely curved screen and a less-than-stellar sound system! Damn.

The Uptown is severely overrated as a theater, sorry.

"How long do they expect to be able to play Pirates 3? Surely they would make far more money switching to a new film..."

The way the industry works, sometimes that isn't the case. For the opening week, the studio will often get 90+% of ticket revenues. This percentage declines week after week, until the theater gets to keep 50+% of ticket revenues.

Of course the theater does better with concessions when they've got a new blockbuster, so that makes up for being gouged by the studio. The theaters really start making out if a movie is still bringing in crowds after a few weeks. Titanic was a dream for them.

Thanks Darpino. That explains it. They just didn't want to shell out money for one more print when it would be replaced a week later. Didn't realize the Harry Potter film was so close to coming out.

They are switching to the new Harry Potter on the 13th.

AMC/Loews has plenty of prints for Transformers too. They have eight prints for just the Hoffman Center tonight!

Surely they could have spared one for the Uptown.

Thats surprising. How long do they expect to be able to play Pirates 3? Surely they would make far more money switching to a new film so perhaps there wasn't enough reels to go to all the AMC theaters opening week and they sacrificed the Uptown. Hopefully they will switch over after another week or two or at least find a different movie to show.
