I personally think that mp3 ringtones are a sign of the downfall of humanity- as if cell phone ringtones weren’t already annoying enough, now I have to get the latest flavor-of-the-month pop hit stuck in my head every time your boo calls you. Cell phones should be seen and not heard. (And have thought that for a long time, long before I ever thought that Apple would release a phone, so that’s not my inner fangirl peeking out. I just hate the sound of a ringing phone.)

3G would have been nice since we happen to be in an area that has 3G coverage… but I understand the reasons behind the choice, and they make sense.

I’m not touching iPhone. Why would I want to lock myself into a two year contract with a service provider which actively opposes net neutrality just so I can use a touchscreen device which doesn’t give me tactile input feedback?

There’s also some saving grace in the first-gen thing here since Apple has shown some willingness to release updates for physical products. While not -all- the features of newer iPods were released to me with bios updates they did send out some enhancements as things happened.

So they may fix some of the things about the first iPhone that turn me off (no mp3 ringtones?) though others (EDGE not 3G? Laaaaame) will require a hardware fix.

I feel that the first gen thing is true for some types of hardware – video game systems for example.

That said, maybe Apple just has a good track record with product design, so people don’t think twice before lining up for release.

And yeah, there is the good point that this looks to be far superior to anything else on the market.

The myth about first generation products is overblown. In recent years I’ve bought four first-generation Macs (G4 Cube, PowerBook G4, G4 Mac mini, MacBook Pro — and make it five if you count my Core Duo Mac mini as another first-gen model). I’ve been universally happy with all of them. Well, except for the lousy wireless reception in the PowerBook G4, which was a triumph of form over function. The Cube is still a solid, silent machine, if a bit creaky for today’s Javascript-and-Flash heavy web.

Buy AppleCare whenever you buy a Mac and you’ve really got little to worry about.

I think the rush to early adoption is a statement on just how awful most mobile phones are. I think people are willing to take a chance that the manufacturing kinks might not be worked out just to get the hell AWAY from their Blackberries and Blackjacks. After all, if the hardware is defective, you’ll be able to get it replaced, but no one is offering a replacement policy for the appallingly poor software on my Helio Kickflip.

And personally? I’m willing to pay $500 just to have visual voicemail.

I’m planning to start standing in line at 5:30. I have a fallback plan if the line at my chosen location looks greater than expected supply, but I’m guessing that it’ll still be possible to buy one at 10pm tonight. I doubt the supply will hold out through the weekend, though.
