The spiciest vegetarian dish in DC definitely comes from my kitchen and I think I am going to prepare it for lunch this afternoon. Stir fried noodles, Thai style.

In restaurants, you always have a good bet going with Thai and Indian restaurants. Tell them you want it Thai style. I tell Thai wiatstaff that I am a farang (honkey) but that my mouth is Thai. The same works with Indian places. They are happy to take up the challenge of burning you silly.

Go to Teddy’s Roti at Geranium and Georgia Ave, and get a roti with “plenty” pepper sauce. Burn!

I second Chris’ comment, with a qualifier: His girlfriend is Indian. Most indian and thai places in town tell you what is hot and what isn’t, but do not give you the choice of spiciness to go with ever dish.

This is less important in Indian cuisine than it is in Thai, as most (good) Thai resturaunts I’ve been to will give you the option of how spicy to make every meal.

That said: most of the time I’m dissapointed with how spicy my food is. Its either not spicy enough (but oftentimes rich in other ways) or else a boiling inferno that lacks other flavors.

Siracha is kind of cheating. There are better ways to make things spicy.

I haven’t been to Bangkok 54 yet. I’ll have to give it a try.

I’m not vegetarian, but I’m dating an Indian girl who is. From the dishes she’s made me, and her liberal use of Saracha sauce, I can’t agree with your “vegaterian = bland” sentiment. Quite the opposite. In the year since we’ve been dating, I’ve eaten the hottest food I ever have in my life. Try some indian restaurants if you’re looking for hot :)
