MPD. On Segways.

You’ve seen the Segway Tours of DC, but now the next time you see a person on a Segway, they might be a DC Police Officer. The city has purchased 25 segways, with an option for 10 more, for various patrols in the DC area. At first, I’ll admit, this brought humorous images to mind, but the more I think of it, I think this could extend the distance that a pair of beat cops could cover in a patrol, not to mention makes them much higher visibility during the patrol.

So, make your jokes, this could make for a better police force.

Of course, the second a criminal ganks a segway…then it’s fair game for all the comedians.

Police in the Union Station / Capitol Hill area have had Segways for some time now. I was a little surprised to see them adopted for Union Station since there is not that much ground to cover inside the building.

Believe me, we’ve been laughing at the cops on Segways here in Chicago for years. It’s the goofiest sight imaginable.

Wayn back in August 2005 , I thought DC cops on Segways were funny & inefficient. Bicycle cops are faster and more engaged. Not to mention they get to wear shorts too.

Cops at National and Dulles have been using the buggers for a few years now. I saw cops using them at BWI also…lazy bastards.
