Hey,

That is the first time I hear somebody being excited about moving from the city to the burbs :) but I guess if you like it there and you have friends, that's the way for you..as for me it's the total way around...am sick of the burbs and bored to tears and can't wait to move closer to the city or right in the city. But I am not American and these types of English style houses do not answer my taste..anyway good luck to you!

Haha - thanks everyone for the advice. First, however, I will not be able to take 66 in to the city in any way. HOV. My current plan is to take 123 to the Parkway or Old Dominion. We'll see what happens, but I will be living right on 123, so it's too out of my way to go down to 50. Maybe 29 would work.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice - Vienna has a great scene now, I like the people and I'm ready for a non-singles-only crowd anyway. I'm around enough of that on my own, I wouldn't mind being around some families.

I will of course keep everyone posted when I move in 5 weeks!

I second the Route 29 drive, it's not that bad at all. I lived near the East Falls Church Metro for the longest time and took it too work every day. Route 50 is often too busy, Wilson isn't too bad either but Ballston/Clarendon traffic is less than ideal.

Em Vee: Thanks, I found the George and Dragon the last time I was there and made some fast friends, as I did Wednesday at the Courts due to my colourful language...just ask Tom.

Pathetic loss, Liverpool could have done so much better. They should have put Crouch and sooner and played Dudek, oh well, onwards and upwards.

I grew up in Vienna and it is a pretty good place for a kid or parents, not as much for single, childless people.

About the only thing I go back for other than to see my folks is the Vienna Inn. Drafts in frosted mugs for under $2 and chilly dogs. They used to sell so much draft Bud that the Clydesdales showed up for the Halloween Parade. The waitresses aren't nearly as surly as they used to be though.

I think a number of new restaurants have opened along Church Street as well.

Stacey,

seconding or thirding the rush hour commute from that corner of vienna. my $0.02 is to try idylwood road to the 66 ramp at WestFalls church -- 123->66 will be a nightmare. also try 29 into the city, a few lights, but rarely stopping traffic. the jammin java, wholefoods, bagel places section of vienna is nice and cutesy, you`ll like it.

Mik - love seattle, if you had to move pacific NW is prolly as good as it gets. yesterday's loss sucked, sorry - and if you havent found out already ... huge liverpool support in seattle. so enjoy !

There's a huge speed trap on Route 123 leaving the Tyson's area, cops hide out there all the time.

MBFAN#2 - Thanks, hopefully I can still blog a time or two over this way, and I'll certainly be back to visit the many friends I've made over the years.

Max - I'm English, Seattlites don't know what real rain is!

Stacey,
Reading about road rage above, I also wanted to warn you to toe the line while driving in Fairfax. The cops are really on top of giving out tickets for violations related to stop signs and red lights. Don't speed, they catch that too. And last, don't try to sneak onto I-66 during HOV hours if you are alone. They set traps for that.
Try Rt.s 50 and 29 to see which one serves you best.
Take advantage of being so close to the W & OD. I loved that trail!

I lived in Seattle for three years and trust me, it rains and then it rains some more. It's not a downpour but a constant drizzle for 9 months.

The summers are perfect though, especially since the sun doesn't go down until 10:00 and you rarely need air conditioning.

Vienna is probably the best town to move to - anywhere else in Fairfax would feel real suburban and Vienna is more like an English town (except for the strip malls on the one side of 123. AND you can easily bike to the Vienna Metro Stn, instead of driving.

As for Mik, sorry to hear that you are moving but congrats on moving to Seattle! I just got back from visiting there and it is a nice city - voted most livable? Plus, if you are a caffeine fiend, that is the place for you. Luckily, my visit there was full of sunshine and warm weather - no precipitation to speak of. Made me wonder if it was a lie propagated by the Seattlites so the rest of the population stay away.

Wow, certainly a lot of life changes to the DCMetblogs' gang. Best of luck to all.
