FYI: Security Guards at Union Station have become aggressive in approaching photographers and telling them they may not photograph inside Union Station beyond the Main Hall. Their directives are simply wrong. First off, Union Station is a public space--the building is owned by Amtrak, which furthermore does not regulate photography inside its stations (except commercial shoots or use of tripods). The retail sections of Union Station are managed by the firm Jones Lang LaSalle. Their website for Union Station only indicates that a permit is required for commercial shoots (the permit asks questions such as number of crew, commercial air dates, and the like).

If you are approached by a security guard and erroneously directed by them regarding limits on photography, do not argue with them, but DO ask their name (or make note of any name tag), politely ask them precisely what the legal reasoning is, and then let me know. I am preparing a letter to Amtrak, and the management firm, regarding repeat instances of security erroneously constraining amateur photographers.
