Philly Parking in Petworth

Riding home tonight, my third night in my new hood, I noticed a funky fresh parking method in Petworth.

Like in Philly, folks around here park in the middle of the street. Median parking may not be legal but it is efficient.

Everyone likes rock star parking and this way everyone gets a spot next to home.

Where did you park tonight? Was it this convenient?

A little piece of North Broad St in our own neighborhood. Makes me a little homesick.

If it’s not legal, do the parkers not get tickets? Or is it an unenforced law?

I’ve seen ambulance crews park in the median up in Adams Morgan just to go get a coffee. Makes sense. I didn’t know that this was a special, localized form of parking indigenous to Philly. Very interesting. What is pictured in your photo kind of creates the illusion of a boulevard (of which DC is sorely lacking). I like it.

HY, that isn’t an illusion, New Hampshire Avenue in Petworth is a boulevard – four car lanes, parking on both sides and a median wides enough to park in. There is talk of making that median a green stretch of trees & plants – a better boulevard.

I guess my definition of boulevard necessarily includes a hard median, preferably one that is green and tree-lined, and not just a median turning lane or even a plain concrete median. But I’m just being romantic here. That said, where are some examples of this in the metro area?

Big wide streets? Um, Pennsylvania Avenue comes to mind. In NW as a paved stretch. In SE, with trees & such.

Hmmm. Lived in Petworth for almost 2 years now and I didn’t know there was that kind of parking.

That type of parking is very common for the extra Church parking. There was a Ward 4 candidates Forum last night which is why you saw parking like that. You’ll also see it every Sunday. But otherwise it is illegal. Welcome to the neighborhood Wayan.

This is a great parking solution. I have seen this in Philly and somewhere else, although I cannot remember where now. But we don’t have such parking shenanigans in Arlington as you do in DC. One nice thing about VA is that you are allowed to park on the lawn. Once you get into Fairfax County, it’s almost expected.
