Wonderland’s Propane Taxi Bathtub

How is this for a fire hazard: a tub of propane tanks just waiting for some drunken fool to ignite as they stumble around Wonderland’s beer garden.

If you too live by the cheap gas, you might be interested in a strange DC sight: the Propane Taxi.

This is a propane tank delivery service that will bring you refills right to your door, or tub. Just don’t drop a tank on your toe, John.

The emergency room wait for care on that foolishness is long I hear.

To be honest I once witnessed a pickup trick filled with propane tanks on 123/Ox Road where one tank fell off and was still tied to its moorings on the truck. I, like you, assumed these things could easily be shattered and I would be pelted with shrapnel. However, the truck with propane tank behind it traveled down 123 for quite a while without incident. I really was hoping for an explosion but those things must be built with some strength around them for that type of event. How a drunk would blow it up would be beyond me.

Propane Taxi: How cool of a service is that. I just tried them. They dropped a great looking propane tank right to my door…it was cheaper than going to the store. I don’t know what took anyone so long to figure this out, but I love it. Hope they’re making money, but I can’t figure out how?!?!

I think there’s a lot of profit in the refilling of the tank itself, Ben. A quick googling around and I can find people who will refill a 20lb tank (like those above) for $18, a 100lb for $65. So even just that bulk discount from a retailer makes 20lb $13 if you buy it 100lb at a time. $7 profit for delivery? Not bad for them and good for those of us who would pay the same $20 if we did the driving ourselves.
