Kite Festival: Perils, Pirates, Pink Elephants

Went down to see the cherry blossoms [1] and kites [2] today. No doubt we will have more than enough photos of the flowers in the days to come, so I’d like to draw your attention to the Kite Festival instead. After the jump.
The Washington Monument Tree [3] ate well today, snagging various kites from the Kite Festival [4] which strayed too close to its branches in today’s strong winds.
My favorite kites at the Festival were definitely the ship ones. Pirate ships, especially, with their strings almost invisible, looking for all the world like the Peter Pan ride [7].
Finally, a Pink Elephant Kite and a guy wearing a kickass costume for no reason that I could fathom on the Monument Grounds, presented to you without further comment.
