R2D2: The Jedi Master of DC Postal Delivery

On the streets of DC we have a new protector of the US mail: R2D2.

No longer need you worry about Tusken Raiders intercepting your Christmas Cards or accessing the Cloud City mainframes while under Storm Trooper fire. R2 will protect & deliver for you. He is the USPS Jedi Master.

He does have limitations though. As much as I tried, I didn’t get a Princess Leia Organa projection, and mail delivery to Alderaan has been suspended.

Even droids have their limits.

(More R2-D2 Photos here)

Update: I went back & took more photos of the R2D2 Mailbox and check out the security bolts they are using to lock these droids down. You know they’re thinking these will be theft magnets for pesky jawas.

Before anyone gets any crazy ideas, like um, maybe offering $$ for the receipt of a R2D2 mailbox, no questions asked, tampering with USPS mailboxes in any fashion is a felony offense:

    http://www.usps.com/websites/depart/inspect/tipvandl.htm
Mailboxes are considered federal property, and federal law (Title 18, United States Code, Section 1705), makes it a crime to vandalize them (or to injure, deface or destroy any mail deposited in them). Violators can be fined up to $250,000, or imprisoned for up to three years, for each act of vandalism.

Keep in mind, this is a promotion for a new stamp commemorating the anniversary of starwars…they could have done a lot worse…

Worse? This rocks!! I only wish they would make a retail version. You KNOW Star Wars mailboxes would sell out in a heartbeat.

Or run neck and neck with Star Trek versions. Think of it: tribble mailboxes…

It seems The Force will be strong at USPS:

“UPDATE 2: We’ve gotten word from our inside “Rebelscout” that an Imperial transimission reveals the number of mailboxes to be 400 nationwide. ”

I want one, if only to have Princess Leia mail my package.

Does that make FedEx the Klingons?

Will Star Wars branding pay off for USPS? Something has to. Unless you’re one of those rare stamp collectors, then you know the post office is a place avoid…

    Since I’m feeling dorky –

Many Bothans died to bring us this Metroblog post.

Check out the Artoo creation process as described by the artist who put him on the mailboxes. Very cool:

“when I first got the call to bid on a job for some creatives who had a great idea of turning Postal mailboxes into R2-D2, I was, well… Geeked.”
