There used to be sidewalk pay phones all over Manhattan, the last time I was there they were all gone. It seemed like 90% of the people walking down the street were talking on their mobiles.

My favorite is seeing a couple sitting outside a cafe with coffee or a meal, and both of them are talking on their phones. Some intimacy, right?

I’ve often stopped to ponder the same thing while washing my hands next to the pay phone in the ladies room at the 9:30 Club. My conclusion is that it’s one of the only places inside the building that’s quiet enough for a call during a show. Does Lauriol get so loud from mindless chatter to give weight to the same argument? Seems like a no to me…

Trinity University has pay phones in Main Hall. I’ve never seen anyone use them though, but it amuses me to see people chatting on their cell phones right next to them.
