NW Post Offices

Today was slated as the busiest shipping day of the year. You know, you waited until the last minute (me), you started and finished your shopping this weekend (me), and suddenly realized yesterday that anything that needed to get anywhere but Grannies house down the street needed to go to the Post Office today and no later (um, sure, also me).

Thanks to the nice and efficient folks at the Post Office at M and 19th today for awesome service. I did go earlier than I normally would, around 9:30 a.m., but there were already 15 to 20 people in line and I was only in there for 10 minutes not including paying and stamping all my packages.

They had a great system going: staff stationed at the automatic machines to troubleshoot, a staffed stamp station, and friendly and fast staff at every register.

Thanks ladies (yeah, at that point they were all ladies) for a not-so-painful shipping experience on the worst shipping day of the year. Let’s just hope all my peeps get their packages in time!!

Anyone else have either good or nightmare Post Office experiences today?

The Post Office at M & 19th is my favorite in the greater DC area, if only for their actions on Christmas Eve, 2000. I had been in the DC area for less than six months, and I was spending my first Christmas away from my family in California. My mom packed a big box of stuff from home and sent it to arrive on the 22nd of December via Priority Mail to my office downtown.

It didn’t arrive on the 23rd. My mom was upset, so she talked to her postmaster general in Davis, CA, who got on the horn to the postmaster for the area of DC my office was in, specifically the office there at 19th & M. Supervisor Jeter called my Mom, tracked down the package, and I got to pick it up on Christmas Eve in the afternoon before they closed. Totally made my day. Though it had gotten misrouted by the USPS, the folks at the office there at 19th & M made up for it and made my Christmas happen that year.

I love the guys at M & 31st, they are usually always super efficient and it’s as though it’s the secret post office that no one really knows about because the lines are never super long when I’m there (yes, I’ve just jinxed myself). The post office on Wilson in Clarendon (yes, near the Four Courts, what’s that you say? Me and my Guinness, why yes, of course, but it was half time during the freaking ARSEnal game) was packed on Saturday, and the guys and gals did a fabulous job of getting us through the longest line in the world evah….even one of the WTOP Street guys was there interviewing a bloke in line.
