Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade

parade The Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade kicks off in downtown Silver Spring at 10 AM next Saturday at Sligo and Georgia avenues (map).
The parade travels north on Georgia, then east on Ellsworth ending at Veterans Park. The event runs until noon.

Although not on par with the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC, this years event will feature 50 foot ballons and other floats. The Washington Redskins Marching Band will participate, as well the as Philadelphia Greater Overbrook String Band and a number of local High School marching bands.

There is plenty of free parking downtown, although the Wayne Ave. Garage will be closed—or skip the car and take the Metrorail red line to the Silver Spring Station, the parade is just two blocks away. Hint: if you get there early walk up Bonifant under the parking structure, Georgia Ave. is the very next light, and trust me, you will see the crowds. If you get there later you will probably be better off walking up Wayne past the Discovery Channel headquarters towards Ellsworth.

If the weather is good and I snap some good shots, I’ll upload them to Flickr and drop links in the comment section of this post.
