When I lived in a studio apt for about a year before I met my neighbor below me. He was an slight old man who lived simply and would come in and out of his place to do groceries, took the bus and to do volunteer work at the library. He was self-sufficient.

I went away over the weekend and a few days exactly 4-5 years ago - it was around the beginning of October and found out that he has passed in his sleep. Luckily he had family in the area and they checked up on him periodically and those days while I was away, his sister couldn't reach him so the bldg maintenance guy found him.

He was about his 80's too and he died alone.

However, your story and this story is a few among many similar stories I've heard in passing. In the Post not long ago (someone mentioned here at DCmetblogs a year ago?), there was a story about an old guy they found in a house that was bought on the market. No one bothered to see the house and they found the guy's remains in the bathroom where he had passed. Same story, old guy lived by himself, a fixture in the neighborhood and then no one saw him for a while, thinking he left town.

Hopefully, you got to know him enough to know what his life was before he become "the guy who passed away downstairs". I wish I knew my neighbor a little more.
