New Curve Rule
The NHL has updated their rule on maximum stick blade curvature from ½” to ¾”. This is another attempt at increasing the amount of scoring around the league and thus making the games more thrilling and boosting attendance and TV ratings. It should also help when it comes to shootouts in tie games, which often slow to a crawl because the officials have to keep checking for illegal equipment.
It’s also good news for the European players who grew-up with the International Hockey and Olympic rules, which allow for the more curved blades. The Capitols star left winger Alex Ovechkin, who turned 21 yesterday, appears to be very excited about the change. With a team leading (by far) 52 goals and 54 assists (106 total points) during the 2005/6 season, it looks like he’s poised for an even more productive year.
I’m not a big fan of the Caps, but I must admit I like to watch this kid play. He is an amazing talent.
