Memorable Quote: “If you’ve ever seen the look on somebody’s face the day they finally get a job- I’ve had some experience with this- they look like they could fly. And its not about the paycheck, it’s about respect, it’s about looking in the mirror and knowing that you’ve done something valuable with your day.”
As someone who works at a temp agency, making her living by finding work for other people, Dave Kovic is particularly near and dear to my heart. At my office, he’s our patron saint, the guy who put into words what we love about our jobs. He is also, as someone aptly pointed out on the MBDC discussion list, the president we all wish we had but could never elect for ourselves.
Owner of a temp agency in DC, he spends his days finding people jobs until the Secret Service comes knocking. Pressed into service due to his remarkable resemblance to President Bill Mitchell, Dave finds himself impersonating the President to avoid national scandal after Mitchell has a debilitating stroke while in bed with one of his aides. Before long, Dave has taken to the role like a natural and in some way, acts as our proxy- asking why we keep paying those government contractors if they aren’t delivering their projects on time, and how IS it possible that the government can’t balance its budget, anyway? He makes it the responsibility of his administration to find a job “for every American who wants one.”
It can’t last forever, of course, and eventually the political machinations of the evil ex-Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander, force Dave to turn over the Oval Office to the Vice President. With a newfound taste for public service, Dave goes home to run for city council, using his temp agency as a campaign headquarters.
