Cyclist run over by Dump Truck
I’ve yet to hear a major news source report on this, but this morning, shortly after 9 a.m., a dump truck ran over a cyclist near 12th and I Streets. Apparently the cyclist was unconscious, and the tires of his bicycle still underneath the dump truck when the police arrived on scene.
Having just purchased a new bicycle this morning to start twice weekly commutes into Georgetown, incidents such as this put the fear of death deep down into my core. Perhaps falling down ravines and rendering one’s right knee useless for three years is a better option.
Did you see this? Better yet, have a photo? And at which cross street between I and J?
No, I did not see this, a friend did. Said friend works on I and 12th and 12th and New York, so I presume right around there?
Was it a cyclist or a bike courier?
One’s worth saving, the other, not so much…
I am going on the information of another. I don’t know downtown, so between I and what logical streets surrounding I, 12th and New York? You tell me oh DCers.
Tom: No clue, I presume a cyclist given the hour.
MIK, would you check your sources please. Location and time are kinda important for us and are required to follow up with the MPD. And foolish me for forgetting the J Street joke: http://www.districttees.com/Shirts/JStreet.html
Wayan – I stated the streets above, source says on I after 12th, and it was around 9 a.m.
“Was it a cyclist or a bike courier?
One’s worth saving, the other, not so much…”
Whoa.
I take it you’ve never been barrelled over by a bike courier on the sidewalk, or subject to harassment because you asked him to slow down or watch where he was going. Or, perhaps, you’ve never watched one run every light, stop sign and signal in this town causing accidents and car drivers to swerve out of the way as they came barreling down the wrong way of a one way street?
I hate bike couriers something fierce.
yeah, “they” are all like that. good riddance if they get hit and die.
man, the number of times i’ve had an “urban” person cross a street in front of me, not at a crosswalk mind you, in the middle of traffic is astounding. i hope they die too.
*rolls eyes*
Roll your eyes as much as you want, Rob, it doesn’t change the fact that a good majority of DC’s bike couriers are hazards, both to traffic and to pedestrians, and they deserve what they get when they fail to pay respect to the traffic laws.
Rob, while I may dislike Segways, Tom thinks bike curriers are akin to Teste fly larvae. For us of the velocipedic persuasion, couriers are the pinnacle of independent locomotion.
From a DC Tri Club Fourm post, originaly copied from the “D:20 list”:
The street right outside my office (12th & I) is temporarily shut down by police who told me a cyclist was hit and dragged by a dump truck about half a block or more. Apparently, the driver of the truck was completely oblivious to the fact that they were dragging a person until a crowd of people screamed at him at the next intersection. I don’t know all the details but I believe this person was killed. Just wanted to see if anyone knew the full story or identity of the rider.
Wayan – I’ve still yet to see reports of this incident, sad really given the volume of people who witnessed it. I sincerely hope the cyclist made it.
Wayan, I dislike people who can’t play well with others, and that means not being fucking maniacs in traffic and on the sidewalk.
That’s not too much to ask, is it?
Interesting… I called 311 and was put through to DC Ambulance dispatch. They don’t have a record of a call for their services around 9am yesterday from 12th and I Streets.
I also called WABA http://www.waba.org and they didn’t know of the accident. They’re gonna look into it too.
Still nothing, but a coworker did tell me yesterday that he heard it on whichever ratio station he listens to (my guess is hot 99.5 fm) on Tuesday.
I ride bike and I’m always scared when have to drive busy routes. Why don’t they do special bikeroutes so we cab get to any part of the city with no harm?
