The Straight Story

David Lynch is a chainsmoking madman who likes to paint with meat.

I’ll never forget the time my brother and I were in the video store, scanning for something interesting. When along comes these teenage girls, three of them, and at the same time I spotted Blue Velvet on the shelf. A wicked film I had no interest in revisiting. A low comment to this sentiment caused a response from these same freshmen “ooh, we rented that movie by mistake one night, how utterly horrible!”

Apparently they had been introduced to Frank in their PJ’s. Poor things.

The AFI is featuring Lynch this month, and next. I was upset when Twin Peaks went off the air, then again the American public wasn’t ready for it. Or ever will be. Amazing that it lasted as long as it did. I used to watch it with my mother, which shocked me like the first time I heard her say “fuck”. In fact, she turned me onto it, and we laughed each week at the crazyness of it all.

I have seen all of his films, so I won’t bother going back. However, if you want a recommendation, The Straight Story is by far the best of them. Richard Farnsworth is amazing, and I believe it was his last film. RIP Rich.
