Being a lifetime Cincinnati fan who is now a Nats fan too, I've personally witnessed Jim's success at GM. He made several shrewd moves throughout his tenure in Cincinnati and helped steer a small market team to several playoff appearances. I think you should give him a chance with real ownership before writing him off. I don’t really agree that it’s a bad move. A few years back, I remember reading that MLB "requested" new owners keep the current management team (GM and manager) in place for at least one year. It a) keeps some semblence of continuity and b) doesn't embarrass the previous owner. The owners aren't required to do this, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was strongly implied that whacking the MLB-appointed GM wouldn't be seen in the best light. I know, I know, late comment…
