Don - I love snopes, and constantly use it for those stupid (repost this, forward this and so and so will donate a kajillion cents to poor, dying seven year old) emails that go around my office constantly, usually by hitting the reply all button and pasting the snopes link.

The question of a mix-up on who gets the citation reminds me of one of my favorite TRUE urban legends, <a href="http://www.snopes.com/autos/law/noplate.asp" rel="nofollow">the man who had a vanity plate that said "NO PLATE" who got thousands of citations from the system... one for each reported violation where the officer had written "no plate."</a>

One very good rule that I suggest any driver should live by: any mistake on a citation will void the citation.

Wrong street or lack of quadrant, wrong car type, color or in this case, plate number. Better yet, with the hand-written tickets, if a box is not checked or the hand-writing not clear, bye bye ticket.

Of the dozen tickets I found on my vehicle before I went car-free DC, I only had to pay for two.
