“Alternative” Music This Weekend

So, you’re scratching your head and wondering just what trouble you can get up to this weekend? How about some rock and roll, hillbilly, rockabilly good times? If you’re willing to trek to the burbs, start with Thursday night at Annandale’s Sunset Grille. Holding court: the Rhodes Tavern Troubadours, featuring Wammie-winning Telecaster superstar Dave Chappel. The Sunset’s usually got Harleys in the parking lot and regulars parked at the prime bar seats. Cover is $5. Beers are cheap.

On Friday, dobro master Jerry Douglas, who’s played with Alison Krauss and others, will likely sell out the Birchmere, even though it’s a typically annoying Birchmere event that starts at 7:30, has a cover of $35 plus service charges, and will likely end at 9PM. If you’ve got the dough, consider it the first event of the evening.

Sunday, at Jammin Java in Vienna, it’s the twisted sounds of Unknown Hinson, a rockabilly poet and axe master, who’s also doing voiceovers on the Cartoon Network’s Squidbillies. Cover $10.
