Restaurantblogging: Seafood

Personally I prefer my seafood uncooked. Growing up in Miami there was just so much fresh seafood to be had that I got good and spoiled. So now I’m very finicky about seafood and most places just don’t measure up, so I usually pick sushi over seafood. My darling girlfriend, however, didn’t come to this position despite also growing up in a coastal town. So I end up going to more seafood places than I would necessarily like and she goes to less than she’d care for. Sometimes my inner crank is proved right and it’s lousy. More often I’m simply unimpressed. Our experience at RT’s Restaurant, however, was just flat-out excellent.

We started out with soup and I had the red chowder, which was wipe-it-up-with-the-bread superb. My darling girlfriend had the she-crab soup which she enjoyed but seemed more like a sherry delivery system to me. Supposedly if you like she-crab soup this is a Good Thing. Y’all can keep it.

Main course-wise I went for the gumbo which was flawed only so far as it made me think of that evil Jimmy Buffet song. DG was feeling too torn to pick a single entree, a problem I also wrestled with, so instead went with two appetizers. While the Acadian Pepper Shrimp was okay, it wasn’t as flavorful as she’d have liked and it has a presentation that flat-out just needs to be abandoned. The shrimp are not shelled and come finger-burning-hot and soaking in sauce. They might be marginally okay as a multi-person appetizer where, after the four minutes you need to wait for them to cool, the lot of you can peel and eat them all before the last few get cold. The fried oysters, however, got a rousing thumbs-up.

All in all, good food and very polite and prompt service. I never had my water glass drop below half full and we never had a wait for any kind of attention. RT’s gets one of the best ratings I feel I can give an establishment in a town with so many dining choices – we’ll definitely be back.
