The Things You Find Out…

Are you one of those people that gets freaked out when driving behind – or even near – a car trailer? You know, the ones that look like all 12 cars are going to roll right off the back and into your vehicle?

Well, you might worry about that (I’ll admit to being freaked out by those things), but have you ever been scared of something flying off a work truck and invading your car? A few years ago there was a story just like this in the DC area – and apparently everyone heard of the freak accident. Turns out it was my coworker that had a pitch fork almost take off his head while driving over the Wilson bridge two Novembers ago – be sure to catch the pic in the article.

After him working here for probably over a year I finally asked why he had a massive pitch fork hanging on his wall and I was told the first-hand account of the story: how he saw the utility truck come in the other direction, and suddenly the pitch fork slammed into his truck, only being spared by one of the prongs hitting the metal frame of the car while the others went right through the windshield.

Surprisingly, he told me, he has been stopped by people on airplanes, had heeps of reporters calling him, and was even contacted a year later for a “highway waste” story that a local channel was doing.

I like what his wife said to him when he called her after the incident: “good thing you didn’t die, having a pitch fork kill you I think says something about where you’d have been going.”

I was driving on 270 a few years ago, and a shovel flew off of a landscaping truck in front of me and landed, shovel side down, in the middle of my car’s hood. I don’t think I’ve ever been as scared as I was when a shovel was flying towards my face on the highway.
