100% of the yum at 50% of the price

My dinner on Thursday was at a DC restaurant I have taken a real shine to, Galileo. This was my second experience there and they showed consistency with my last visit. Part of this is good: everything we had was at the worst very good, and more often excellent. The other half of that consistency was unfortunate: service is very uneven. I’ll elaborate below the fold.

Or in our case, prosecco. I’m not normally a fan – it’s usually a bit too sweet for me – but this was just right. Normally $40 a bottle, we paid $20. They’ve got just the one offering.

The unfortunate service this time happened before we were seated. Our 8:30 time slot was already a bit later than I’d have liked, but when there’s a 1/2 off deal going on at a $50-and-up restaurant you can’t be too surprised at a lack of seating times. A forty-five minute wait after that, however, is a surprise of an unpleasant sort. Maybe certain twenty-nine-year-olds can eat right before bed without issue, but on the downward slope to forty I need some digestion time. Our three courses took us till after eleven, a little later than I’d like to be eating.

Last time it was a long wait till we got to speak to the sommelier – easily ten minutes after we placed our food order, which had already been kind of a long wait. I’d written that little hiccup off as the result of several 10+ parties being served, a result of the mid-December brouhahas. In retrospect I am less certain, particularly now that I have spent some time waiting in the bar and enjoying the view of the door in there which is sealed with black duct tape and the fraying sofas.

I’ll still go back for the food, but I have to admit being a little turned off by the issues with the decor and quality of the service considering the price. Anyone else have any Galileo experiences to share?

    I looooove their grill experience. It’s a weekday highlight for me to get the sausage sandwich and a cannoli.
