Back to the Big Easy!

As I’ve mentioned way too many times, I spent a time in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in October. I still get the emails and updates and keep in touch with the people we worked with, because it was such an amazing experience that totally changed our whole team’s lives. Well now, a few friends from the DC area and myself are going back the last week of April.

I am SO excited, I didn’t think I’d have the chance to go back– but we just decided yesterday and we’re really excited! It’s a smaller group this time, but we’re looking forward to helping with rebuilding instead of tear-down this time. This time we can help out the families we’re working with by giving them funds, gift cards to Home Depot and the like.

This is where you all come in. We plan to, several weeks before our trip, host a fundraising happy hour somewhere in downtown DC to try to raise funds for the families we’re helping rebuild. These are the folks whose homeowners insurance says it was flood that caused the damage and their flood insurance tells them it was the wind. Basically both get out clean and these folks are left with little more than the rubble that was left on their property and a FEMA trailer. Now, what will be 9 months later, they are rebuilding but only with the kindness of strangers – a.k.a. you guys!

I’ll be contacting some local friendly pubs around the mid section of town and Dupont to see if a bar would be willing to sponsor a fundraiser – i.e. we invite the people and they give a third (or whatever) of the proceeds from our group’s purchases to the families we’re working with.

Any local contacts or places you all can suggest? If so and you don’t want to post, email me at snchamberlin@yahoo.com.

And p.s. you are ALL invited when the time comes!

If only the trip could be done without taking so much time off work.
